A Standout Show For The Fall!Rating: 8 likes, 0 dislikes
I'm a big Kevin Smith fan so naturally when I found out he directed the pilot, I already knew I was going to watch it regardless of anything else about the show. The premise seemed alright but who cares, Kevin Smith directed the pilot, I was in before I read the premise. Fortunately the pilot was actually quite good! It was funny, interesting, and actually a little heartfelt. The dialog was good, nothing outstanding like it would have been if Kevin actually wrote the script, but it still rather good. The basic plot isn't that deep, kid's parent sell his soul to the devil, he becomes the reaper. That's about all there is to it but that's all there needs to be. The casting was perfect, Bret Harrison (The Loop) just has a natural ability for comedy as does the character's main sidekick, Tyler Labine (Antitrust, Invasion). The love interest for Sam was brilliantly cast (Nikki Reed - The OC). She had great chemistry with Bret and just generally fit into the show extremely well. Unfortunately, I use the term "had" because the role has been recast to Missy Peregrym. We'll see if she can pull the role off as well as Nikki or not. Overall the show was great, well written (despite the lack of Kevin Smith's hand on the script), very funny, and just generally well done.
