At Bolton's Landing, Grey supervises the loading of wood onboard. Once they're ready, he tells Ben to make ready to cast off because they have to be in Natchez and then St. Louis in 72 hours. A woman, Ellie Jenkins, arrives at the dock and calls to Grey to wait for her. As Ben blows the whistle, Ellie's carriage horse panics and runs away, throwing her off the carriage. Grey goes to her aid and Ellie complains that there was three hundred pounds of freight on her wagon,. The captain refuses to send anyone after it and Ellie steps onto the ship and says that he'll have to throw her off.
