Carney walks up to a manor outside of the town of Wingate and nervously goes up to the door. Inside in the drawing room, Amy Carson tells the owner's son, Barton Wingate, there she doesn't love him and doesn't intend to marry him. The only reason she stays is because Barton's father is her guardian. Barton insists that she isn't being fair and fiddles with a knife. He boasts that he took it from a sailor who drew it on him, and Amy figures they argued over a woman. Chip: Well, about Mr. Carney's brother, I'd like another Mr. Carney on the boat.
Grey: Oh, you would, eh? Well, now if he's as big as Mr. Carney is, where's he going to sleep?
Jim Tyler: Holden, you put Carney ashore or we're going to burn your boat. I'll give you two minutes.
Grey: I don't need two minutes. He's not coming ashore.
Jim Tyler: These sticks are dipped in lard. Now you can't put out a dozen fires. Put Carney ashore.
Grey: Well, I can't stop you. But now you boys listen to me. You set fire to my boat and you'd better kill me, too. And if you don't, I'm going to come back here and burn your town!
