She Works Hard for the Money - Recap

The scene opens with a college student walking up talking on the phone and tells the other caller that she will be right back. At the police station, Mara walks in with students from a Middle School and Jane remembers that it is Career Day. She asks which student wants to be a detective and they tell that they wanted to go to the Tween Magazine place but they were full. Jane tells that they are trying to see a shoeprint to solve a murder case. The kids are too busy texting on their phones to care. Suddenly they get a “shots fired” alarm and it is at Boston’s Cambridge University. Mara tells that she will go with Jane and tells that the kids wanted to be at the Tween Magazine place anyways and tells that she will return them to their mothers. Jane gets a call from her mother and tells that she can’t deal with her right now and that she is at work.

Jane and Mara pick up Jane’s mother and she tells that her father left her stranded. They tell her to get in the car as they drive to the university. They arrive at the university and they find the girl from the beginning of the episode. Danielle Davis is the girl that was shot and Jane sees that the campus security is stepping on the evidence. She tells him to get police tape from her trunk. Jane sees her mother peeking around the side and tells her to be driven home. Her mother is shocked that Jane can do the work she does. A girl, Natalie, runs down the stairs and sees Danielle and starts crying. Natalie was Danielle’s best friend and tells that Danielle didn’t have any boyfriend or anything. They go inside Danielle’s room and Lucas Belton, resident advisor, tells that he didn’t know Danielle that well and he tells that she was either studying or playing soccer. Danielle’s father comes up and at the station, Jane talks with him and he tells that the school recruited Danielle because of her soccer skills. He cries and Jane asks if one of the officers can drive him home. He tells that he just wants the killer found.

In the examination room, Mara and Jane examine Danielle’s body and Jane tells that the shooter was at close range. Mara tells that Danielle has sports feet and Jane asks what sport Mara took. Mara tells that she was in Ballet and Fencing. Jane laughs and says that those aren’t sports. Mara asks Jane what sport she played and Jane played field hockey. Mara sees that Danielle’s ankle was broken and that it was hard for her to walk on let alone play on. Barry and Jane meet with the coach and she tells that Danielle was cut from the team and the college pulled her scholarship because of her injury. Back at the station, Korsak gives Jane a file and tells that Danielle paid her tuition in full. $57,000 a year and Jane doesn’t understand it. Barry tells that they pulled the text messages from the phone and find that a B-Bear kept texting her. Brandon Lewis is the boy and he is a sophomore at the university.

Jane meets with Natalie and she tells that Danielle broke up with Brandon a month ago. She tells that Danielle told her that Brandon was stressing her. Brandon was upset. Jane told that Danielle had time since she was cut from the team and how it is that Natalie knew. Natalie tells that Danielle did not want her father to find out and that she was upset about breaking up with Brandon. Jane and Barry go up to two girls at the Frat House and ask for Brandon. One girl is dressed in foil and the other is in a bed sheet. Jane asks what it is about and the girls say it is for their ABC party (Anything But Clothes) for completing finals. Jane and Barry talk with Brandon and he tells that he Pre-Law and that he is not some gangbanger. They question about his temper about breaking up with Danielle and Jane asks if she was seeing someone else. He tells that he loved Danielle and that he wants a lawyer.

Jane is with Mara and she wants to know if the sandwich is from the regular fridge or the dead fridge. She doesn’t want to eat it anyways. Jane tells about the ABC Party and tells Mara that she has regrets from not going to college and that being there was reminding her of the whole thing. Mara tells that Jane knows how to read people and that it is a very good job. Jane gets a call from her mother and meets her outside the station. She has a car that is emitting smoke. Maura looks at the car and tells that she is going to have to put $3,000 into it. Jane’s mom wants Jane to go down to the dealer and help her out. Barry walks up and tells that they found where the key that Danielle had went to. Inside, Barry shows that Danielle stored a nice dress and hooker shoes in her locker at the gym and that she was working to get the money for the tuition for the university. They go undercover in the car that Jane’s mom bought and a man goes up to the car and tells that he’ll take some of what Jane’s got but she flashes her badge and he walks away saying that “the 5-O are lookin’ fine!” Jane sees her contact Mo Monee. She asks if Danielle was one of his girls and he tells that she is not but that she could make a lot of money. He tells that things are changing but she has to have a book that keeps the schedule.

Jane is with her mother at the car dealer that sold her the lemon. She flashes her badge and tells that she wants them to give back her mother’s old car with a new transmission and floor mats to escape the owner having to have to show his forms and permits. Her mother is happy and thanks Jane. At a bar, Jane meets Maura and she tells that she is tired of the case and that they are not getting close. Maura tells that they found synthetic hair on the victim and that it was from a toupee. Jane gets an idea about the piece of plastic that they found because Maura tells that it is from a laptop computer.

Jane meets with the repair shop and asks if anyone came in with a broken laptop to have repaired. The guy gives her a box full of the requests. The security guard that called in Danielle’s murder walks up. He sees Jane and Barry and starts walking backwards. He drops a piece of paper in the trash and runs. Barry catches him and Jane finds that the piece of paper was his repair ticket. At the station, the security guard tells that he didn’t kill Danielle but that he stole her laptop. He tells that the dead girl wasn’t going to use it anymore. Jane tells another officer to lock up the security guard. Barry comes in with the laptop and tells that he found the schedule and that Danielle used to disguise the meetings with classes. They come across the night before Danielle was murdered and there is a meeting at a hotel. Barry tells that he will get the security camera footage and Korsak teases that it is a dead end. Barry gets back and tells that he found the information that they wanted and he rubs it in. Professor Andrew Hilian is the John.

They enter the apartment of Professor Hilian and he is dead. He has the same gun in his hand. Jane says that it is a set up and that it isn’t a suicide. Jane tells that Maura told her that someone killed Professor Hilian. Barry tells that Professor Hilian was withdrawing $15,000 a month for a year and a half. The students hold a vigil for Danielle. Jane walks up to Danielle’s dad and tells that they are doing their best to find the killer. Jane’s phone rings and Korsak tells that the gun is registered to Lucas Bilton. Natalie gets the microphone and Barry notices that she has the same key as Danielle. They walk up and Lucas sees Barry and Jane. He pulls out a gun and holds it against Natalie. He tells that he will kill Natalie too. He shoots Natalie in the ribs and runs Maura tells that she will stay with Natalie and Barry and Jane go after Lucas. He attempts to have a gun fight with the two detectives and he runs but when he turns around to shoot; Jane is there and shoots him first. He is dead.

At the hospital, Natalie comes out in a wheelchair and tells that the bullet was a through and through and she has a few broken ribs but that is all. She asks if Jane is going to tell her parents about her being a prostitute. Jane tells that she is only telling them that she got shot. Natalie tells that her school days are over because she can’t pay tuition. But Jane hands her a folder and it is a receipt telling that Natalie’s school is paid in full and that the college had some hardship money laying around and Natalie’s case is definitely a hardship. Jane and Maura meet at her place and Jane asks how it felt to work on a live victim. Maura tells that it was exhilarating. Jane announces that she got in at Boston’s Cambridge University and Maura wonders what Natalie is going to do about school and Jane tells that she is going back on the university’s expense. Maura asks what Jane is going to tell Danielle’s father and she tells that all he needs to know is that his daughter loved him very much. Maura is touched and is about to cry and Jane asks for more wine.
