Robin of Locksley has returned from the Crusades to find his world in the grip of corruption and fear, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy of Gisborne have an iron grip on the people, and are overtaxing them into poverty, and confining all defilers to oblivion. Robin is faced with a question, and to answer it, he must forsake his lofty lifestyle and become a champion of the people.

Over the course of their journey though, they soon discover that all is not as it seems when it comes to their new acquaintance - he is in fact a tax inspector making his way to Nottingham Castle to make record of the mounds of tax silver stored there.

Robin hatches a plot to possibly find access to the vaults.
