The Rodney character Barry Martin is based on a real life friend of Rodney Carrington who passed away in 2003. Rodney talks about Barry and the use of his name in the show in the tracks titled "Tribute to Barry Martin" and "Angel Friend" on his 2007 album King of the Mountains
