• Bloody good 'Rome' ends on hopeful note |
The best new drama of the year caps its first season with a series of stunning reversals.
It's no spoiler to tell you that Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds) meets his end in the finale of HBO's "Rome" (Sunday at 9 p.m.). Anyone past junior high can see that one coming. But "Rome's" take on one of history's most infamous murders may shock you for the cowardice, pettiness and brutality involved.
Alas, Caesar is not the only player to fall in the finale. Plot threads begun in the first episode are spun out, twisted and severed with dramatic force. The episode opens with street performers re-enacting Pullo's (Ray Stevenson) and Vorenus' (Kevin McKidd) bloody fight in the arena from last week's episode for a delighted crowd. As Atia (Polly Walker) notes, "It's quite good, but they're far more handsome in real life."
