This show is amazing, and I don't say that often. Everything, from the writing, the direction, the sets and the costumes, and most especially the acting is phenomenal. This show is absolutely amazing to watch. Colorful, with every detail fine tuned, the show draws you in and makes you believe. The attention to detail will blow you away. The characters are real, flawed, and can be capable of amazing kindness or murderous cruelty. Take for instance the two matrons who spend the series trying to destroy each other, or the soldier turned citizen just trying to cope with the end of the war. Some characters you love others you want to see destroyed. Historically, it is amazingly accurate. It brings those musty old history books to life in a way you can't possibly image until you watch the series. The ancient Roman empire is made real from the crowded, filthy streets, to the decadent upper class villas, this is how Rome really was. Vulgar, sexual, decadent, immoral, religious, accomplished, bloody Rome, here it is in all it's 'glory'. It's an incredible experience. This is historical fiction at it's absolute finest. I will say this... this show is absolutely not for children and it is not for the feint of heart. It is shocking at times, but not in a way that is forced for ratings or to keep you watching. This is literally the way it was, it will disgust you, it will anger you, it will fascinate you, but above all it will entertain you. Review posted on Sunday, October 28th 2007 at 3:11 am |
