A Little Art, A Little Science - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The Collins' campaign fund raiser is ramping down and Paige indicates her father, “The General”, is now within 5 points of the leader. The group discusses the campaign schedule and one of the stops is a book signing in the city. The General asks his wife Ellen if she wants to go but she declines. Paige steps forward and offers to accompany her father and he agrees and invites Evan to come too.

Eric Kassabian returns from London where his assistant Megan tells him his prize painting is ready for viewing. He pulls a cord to part curtains and reaches for his shoulder in pain. As he gazes upon the painting, he appears to become dizzy and collapses on the floor.

Divya arrives at HankMed and shows Hank a sign that Evan left on the door canceling the staff meeting. Evan is still mad at Hank for keeping secrets about his fiancee Paige's family. Divya tells Hank that sometimes secrets are necessary, thinking of her own situation. They discuss a new patient, Raina Saluja, who has recurring tonsillitis and who has been scheduled for surgery. Divya yawns while Hank is speaking, tired from the second job she is keeping secret, and Hank suggests she go home and get some rest after taking Raina to the hospital. Divya starts to tell Hank her secret when his phone rings.

Eric suffered a laceration to his arm when he fell and Hank stitches it up for him. Hank learns that Eric is a diabetic, which among other things means he heals slower than normal. Hanks tests his glucose level and it turns out to be normal. Eric tells him about fainting when he saw his painting “Isabella”, and shows the painting to Hank. While the two men gaze at the painting in awe, Eric starts to suffer a delusion that the subjects in the painting are moving, then he starts to pass out again.

Hank uses a portable EEG machine to test Eric for an epilepsy related seizure. Eric asks if the seizure could be related to his diabetes and Hank tells him it is possible, it could be damage to his eyes from his disease. Eric laments he searched for his prize painting for 15 years and now may go blind. Hank tells him he is jumping to conclusions and wants him to see an ophthalmologist. He also wants him to get an MRI on his back to determine whether the pain he suffered from pulling on the cord is a simple pinched nerve or if it also might be related to his diabetes. Eric takes the news with grim humor.

Hank arrives him to find Evan waiting for him. Hank asks what he did wrong this time and Evan says basically everything, except for his diagnosis of Ellen. Evan is concerned about her and The General seems oblivious to it. Hank asks about the medications and psychiatrist she was prescribed and Evan says she has tried everything, and will only consider new ideas at this point. Evan says she needs hope and that gives Hank an idea. He has a friend that can help and who practices at Brooklyn Heights Mercy Hospital, the hospital that fired Hank.

Divya is helping Raina with her luggage and questions why she needs so much for just one night in the hospital. Raina tells Divya how she came East to conquer Broadway after being in films and started suffering throat problems. Her general attitude is diva-ish and Divya is hard pressed to control her temper. Just before leaving, Divya receives a call from Jill who is in the city looking for her replacement at Hamptons Heritage Hospital. Jill asks Divya is she can work an extra shift and she agrees, desperate for the money.

Hank arrives at Brooklyn Heights Mercy Hospital to meet with his friend Abby, who is under the impression that Hank is her patient due to everything he went through when he was fired. Hank quickly relieves her of that notion and tells her about Ellen and asks if she would be a candidate for a treatment he has read about. Abby informs him that Ellen's history indicates she would not be a candidate. Hank is disappointed and asks if Abby has any ideas, indicating Ellen is desperate for help.

At Hamptons Heritage, Dr. Paul Van Dyke is treating Riley, a boy for lockjaw and asks Divya to prepare him for surgery. She has an idea she read about in a British medical journal and suggests it is worth a try, before resorting to surgery. Paul agrees and asks Divya to give it a try but she is interrupted by a call from Raina.

Hank returns to Eric's home to check on him and finds him sitting on the lawn alone while a party goes on around him. Hank tells him the EEG was normal and the ophthalmologist found no problems either. Hank has no idea what is causing the fainting but will not give up. The MRI indicated he has diabetes related back problems and will need steroids as treatment. Eric tells Hank his story about his passion for art, and how a broken relationship led to his lifelong love of art. The story suggest to Hank that Eric's problem might be psychosomatic, and his mind is playing tricks on his body. Eric is dubious but agrees to have Hank test him after the party.

Divya changes out of her scrubs before checking on Raina, who is very demanding. She shows Divya a contract she signed with Evan guaranteeing that HankMed would be by her side for her whole stay. She then gives Divya a list of things she wants done.

Evan is playing monopoly with Paige and Ellen while also grilling dinner when Hank arrives. Hank has news of a new treatment option and asks if The General is around to participate in the discussion. He is told he is absent and wouldn't listen anyway. Hank's friend recommends E.C.T., or Electroconvulsive Therapy commonly known as shock therapy. Paige and Ellen both state that E.C.T. was dismissed as an option years before. Hank tells them about changes to the therapy that now makes it painless for the patient.

Hank returns to see Eric who tells him about the special lighting he had installed to protect the painting from damage. As Eric walks toward the painting to pull the curtain cord, he once more starts to faint. Hank has an idea and quickly turns off the special lights, thinking that one of the bulbs is defective and causing a strobe effect that is affecting Eric.

Hank once more uses his EEG machine to test Eric and this time has a specialist online to interpret the results in real time. When he turns the light on again, Eric experiences pre-seizure effects that stop when Hank turns the light off. Hank gives him two options, medication or change the light bulb. He also reminds him he needs to get a spinal injection of steroids at the hospital for his pinched nerve.

Divya is becoming greatly annoyed by Raina and is wearing herself out going back and forth from Raina's room to her hospital duties and constantly changing clothes. Paul finally returns to check on her work with Riley and gets bitten while finishing the process to loosen his jaw. Divya's idea worked and Riley thanks her.

Evan arrives home and tells Hank that Ellen has agreed to see Abby, but they are keeping The General in the dark for now.

Hank speaks with Paul about the steroid treatment for Eric at Hamptons Heritage. Paul gets annoyed with Hank treating him like a med student and assures him he is experienced enough to take care of Paul. He almost runs into an exhausted Divya who stops by Raina's room once again. Divya assures her the surgery will go fine but Raina reveals her insecurity about after the surgery, about whether her voice is good enough for Broadway.

Evan arrives at The General's book signing alone, Paige having gone with her mother to meet Abby. The book signing is on board the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier museum which impresses Evan. Evan works hard at the role Paige usually does, glad-handing the public and whispering pertinent information about each to The General.

After the signing, The General thanks Evan for his work, surprised at his competence. Suddenly he notices Hank walking toward him with Paige. An angry General confronts Hank who tells him Ellen is at the Brooklyn hospital being prepped for E.C.T. The General argues she does not need treatment but a tearful Paige finally stands up to him and says they need to help her now.

Paul finds Diva between patients and recruits her to help with Eric, who she recognizes to her surprise. She tells him she will get him some steroids to take orally after his procedure. He asks her if they have met, but she denies it and quickly sets up the IV and leaves.

The General tells Hank he is trying to protect his wife from yet one more disappointment, because each one is worse than the one before. Hank softens and tells him there are no guarantees, but he thinks it is worth a shot, and he also thinks family support might be crucial for success. The General just wishes he would leave his family alone.

Divya sees Raina off to surgery and tells her she will do fine. She surprises Raina by telling her she downloaded all her music and really likes it and knows she has the chops to make it on Broadway.

Jill arrives at Hamptons Heritage and runs into Divya. She has found a perfect candidate to take over for her and Divya congratulates her, but Jill does not seem very happy.

Ellen is sedated for her E.C.T. treatment. Hank, Evan and Paige watch through an observation window as Abby uses electrodes to send an electrical current through Ellen's brain. As Hank explains, The General arrives quietly and watches the procedure without letting them know he is there. The treatment ends successfully and Paige notices her father, who she hugs.

Outside the hospital, Evan apologizes to Hank and says that he and Hank are all right. Hank returns to the Hamptons to see Eric and discovers him unconscious in his gallery. Hank sees the empty prescription bottle of oral steroids and angrily calls 911 for help, telling the operator he was mistakenly prescribed oral steroids. While this is going on, an exhausted Divya finally arrives home and falls into bed.
