Will Travers is a widowed NYC intelligence analyst for a secretive organization known as the American Policy Institute. His rather mundane world is suddenly turned upside down when his father-in-law and boss David Hadas is killed in a train crash. Will considers leaving API, leading his superior Kale Ingram to offer him David's old job, and all the access that comes with it. Meanwhile, socialite Katherine Rhumor is shocked when her husband suddenly commits suicide.

It is Will's first day as the head of the API. With the rest of the team distracted, Will is instructed to have the information on Yuri Povovich to be done in 24 hours. In the meantime, Will is still trying to figure out the death of David and see if he can make any sense of it. When he is almost killed by a cab, Will starts to wonder if taking the position was a good idea or not. To make matters worse, his team seems a little bit too distracted to give him what he needs.

Katherine meets up with her husband Tom's best friend James Wheeler, in the hopes that he can provide some insight in to his suicide. Will takes apart the last gift David ever gave him, and finds more clues to the conspiracy at API. Maggie's deadbeat ex-husband returns to town, claiming to be a changed man.

API executive Truxton Spangler invites Will to accompany him on a business trip to Washington D.C., leaving Will's team with the responsibility of making a touch decision without their leader. Miles hides the disintegration of his family from his co-workers. Just as she is preparing to move on with her life, Katherine discovers a suspicious voicemail on her dead husband's cell phone.

A clue left by David leads Will to suspect that one of his bosses at API is directly involved in the conspiracy that lead to the former's death. Katherine is sick of the endless amount of unanswered questions surrounding her husband's suicide, and decides to personally force some progress to be made in the investigation, whether Wheeler likes it or not.

Kale gives Will some support on what he is doing when he invites him over to dinner. Maggie is feeling especially lonely and does something that she regrets while Miles contemplates his marriage. Katherine makes a connection between Tom's death and another recent suicide.

The FBI puts API on lock down after a leak is suspected and Spangler has his team leaders gather and corroborate in order to find the mole. Meanwhile Katherine realizes that she is not safe in her own home and takes a drastic step after someone breaks in. Will's team is nervous about the polygraph test that they have to take, and one member knows more then they are admitting.

As Will digs deeper, Kale offers his help and gets Will some vital information along the way. Meanwhile, the CIA ask Miles and Tanya to watch and see if an Al Queda member is lying or telling the truth of the location of a "thought' dead terrorist. Katherine gets an interesting envelope in the mail.

Will decides to move out of his compromised apartment, and meets an attractive neighbor named Andy. Julia Harwell is brought in to replace Tanya during her leave of absence. Katherine reaches out Tom's ex-wife, in order to learn more about his past. Spangler makes Grant an interesting offer.

Tanya returns from rehab. Will secretly contacts Katherine, leading them to finally realize that they are looking for answers to the same questions. Will also finds evidence of David's research at API before he died. Kale Ingram takes countermeasures to protect himself.

A death threat from inside the conspiracy has Katherine afraid to leave her home. Spangler gives Will a special new assignment, but is secretly plotting to take him out of the equation entirely. Tanya briefly re-joins the team to look for a dangerous terrorist.

API joins forces with the FBI and CIA in order to stop a catastrophic terrorist attack from happening. Kale Ingram asks Maggie to watch over Katherine, while Maggie finds out about Will and Andy's relationship. Katherine finds a vital clue to the mystery of her husband's death.

The interlocking conspiracies being investigated by Will and Katherine finally meet in the middle, as revelations are learned about the link between API and David's death, and Katherine finally finds out the truth behind Tom's suicide. Now, the real obstacle is surviving long enough to expose those responsible.
