Runaway: Pilot
After Paul Rader is framed for murder, the Rader family spends three and a half weeks on the run living from hotel to hotel eating fast food, ultimately moving to a small Iowa town. When they finally arrive in town, they take on different names and tell everyone that they are victims of Hurricane Katrina and that this is their fourth move since the hurricane. They also claim that their last stay was in Philadelphia before moving again. After moving in, Paul gets a job at the local coffee shop because it has a wireless signal for his PDA, which he can use prove his innocence, and Henry, the oldest son, gets the family in a bit of trouble when it is discovered that he has been keeping contact with his girlfriend from back home.

When the episode begins, Paul Rader is driving his car and he makes a stop by the lake. He gets out of the car to let it run to the bottom of the lake. Later on Paul is driving and he makes his way to the motel where we are introduced to Lily his wife, Henry, Hannah and Tommy, once he wakes them up they quickly drive away. Just after they get away an FBI agent goes to the motel to look for them. It seems that Paul and his family are running because he is being accused of murdering his secretary just until they can prove his innocence. The family goes from town to town until they come to Iowa. In their new town the family comes up with fake names and try for a fresh start. The family learns to adjust to the change and Paul gets a job as a waiter. At the end of the episode Paul learns that the death of his secretary was not an accident but a setup...Read the full recap

Runaway and Hidden Palms (the other drama the CW picked up for midseason) were both developed for UPN before the merger with the WB to form the CW. Neither of the WB's pilots Split Decision and Mercy Reef were given a series order.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most damaging hurricanes to hit the United States. Katrina caused severe damage to the Gulf Coast of the United States in August 2005. New Orleans was known for being one of the locations most devastated by the hurricane. The city was severely flooded, with several of its levees breaking, and many of its residents evacuated the city, with many of those choosing not to return.
Claiming to be victims of Katrina would most likely engender sympathy and understanding of their lack of material possessions and records for the Raders, but the fact that the hurricane was more than a year earlier may work against the effectiveness of this as a cover story.
