The pompous King of Bohemia consults Holmes about a recent affair of the heart which he has conducted with Irene Adler, a beautiful opera singer with whom the King was foolish enough to allow himself to be photographed.

The King is now betrothed to a member of another Royal House and is afraid that the photograph, which is in Irene Adler's possession, may compromise his new arrangements. Holmes agrees to find the photograph for the sake of the future security of the House of Bohemia.

Irene Adler is not at all the sort of person whom Holmes had expected however, and he finds himself quite smitten with the lady who turns out to be more than a match for Holmes's subtlest and imaginative plans.

Episode Quotes

Watson: (narrating) To Sherlock Holmes she was always The Woman, the beautiful Irene Adler of dubious and questionable memory.

Watson: (to Holmes, angrily) What is it tonight - morphine or cocaine?
Holmes: (drowsily) Well, I can strongly recommend a seven per cent solution of cocaine. (defiantly) Would you care to try it??
Watson: No indeed. I speak not only as your friend but as a medical man - how can you risk such damage to the great powers with which you have been endowed??
Holmes: I cannot tell you how it clarifies and stimulates the mind.
Watson: (furious) Yes, and destroys it - in time!!
Holmes: My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems. Give me work. Give me the most abstruse cryptogram, the most intricate analysis and I am in my proper atmosphere, and dispense with artificial stimulants, but I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave mental exaltation - that is why I have chosen my own profession, or rather, created it, for I am the only one in the world.
Watson: The only unofficial detective.
Holmes: The only unofficial consulting detective - I take no credit in my cases. The work itself, the pleasure of finding a field for my particular powers, is my highest reward.

Holmes: (in tones of wonderment) She gave me a sovereign - here it is - (showing it to Watson). I shall wear it on my watch chain in memory of the occasion.

King: (to Holmes) I am immensely indebted to you. Pray tell me in what way I can reward you - this ring?
Holmes: Your Majesty has something which I should value even more highly ...
King: You have but to name it.
Holmes: This...
King: Irene's photograph? Certainly - if you wish it.
Holmes: (taking photograph) Then I have the honour to wish your Majesty a very good morning.
