Episode Summary

Hilton Cubitt has had an idyllic marriage of three years to his American wife Elsie but when she starts receiving odd written messages in the form of dancing stick men all of this changes, and she becomes fearful and secretive.

Mr. Cubitt consults Sherlock Holmes who discovers that the stick men is a kind of code, and that Elsie's American background is an unhappy violent one.

Events take a serious turn when Mr. Cubitt is shot dead one evening. The police suspect Elsie Cubitt of murder and attempted suicide, but Holmes, following the lead of the dancing men code, knows better and traps the real offender into making an appearance.
