Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are summoned to Aldershot after the suspicious death of Colonel James Barclay, an ambitious Officer of the Regiment stationed there.
Found dead in a room with his swooning wife Nancy by his side, Holmes at first suspects that Colonel Barclay has met with foul play when clues point to the presence in the room of an exotic animal. When he discovers that a stranger to the area, a crippled man by the name of Harry Wood, is the owner of a pet mongoose, he interviews Wood and hears a very strange story indeed.
