Holmes is consulted early one morning by two very distinguished gentlemen, Trelawney Hope and Lord Bellinger. An important letter which could compromise the Government and lead to war has been stolen from Trelawney Hope and the two men wish to engage Holmes to get the letter back before it is made public and the country plunged into chaos.

After the two gentlemen have departed, the formidable Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope arrives at Baker Street wanting to know more about the letter and its contents.

Holmes is at first baffled by this case, especially when one of the leading antagonists, Eduardo Lucas, is found stabbed to death in his London home. The discovery of an inexplicable second blood stain in Lucas' drawing room leads Holmes to the truth.
