While visiting London one day to do a bit of shopping and have afternoon tea, Mrs. St. Clair wanders into an undesirable area of the capital and is astonished to see her husband appearing at the top window of a notorious opium den run by thieves and cut throats. All efforts to gain entrance to see her husband proving fruitless, Mrs. St. Clair contacts the police but by the time they arrive at the scene her husband has vanished, the only inhabitants of the room being a sinister beggar man and the proprietor of the establishment.
Although the police presume Neville St. Clair to be dead his wife is convinced that he is still alive, and consults Sherlock Holmes who undertakes enquiries which bring about a successful conclusion to the matter.
