Several years earlier, Lucrezia Venucci was a maid to the Italian Princess who owned the Black Pearl of the Borgia's. A plot was arranged between Lucrezia and her family to steal the black pearl but in the end it was Lucrezia's boyfriend Beppo who accomplished the deed.
Thieves fell out, and the black pearl was smuggled to England contained within one bust of six small ones of Napoleon. The Venucci family brought their quarrel to England and Lucrezia's brother Pietro was murdered by Beppo during a fight.
Holmes is called in to untangle the mess of family intrigue and also to help Inspector Lestrade solve the mystery of the six statues of Napoleon.
