Colonel Ross is a well known racing identity on Dartmoor who employed John Straker as his trainer. Early one morning Straker is found on the moor with fatal head injuries caused by a blunt instrument of some kind. The famous racehorse Silver Blaze is also missing and Colonel Ross is anxious to get him back as he and his stable mate Bayard are both entered in the forthoming Wessex Cup.
Holmes is called in by Inspector Gregory of the county police as their enquiries are failing to locate the killer of Straker or the location of Silver Blaze. Holmes examines the scene of the crime and several clues lead him to its solution.
