A network hosts a reality show where sixteen contestants are taken to an abandoned settlement in Siberia. There they must survive the winter just as those who lived there originally did. After passing the first test and making a fire, the contestants discover a new and unexpected challenge when one of their own disappears, and an injured cameraman staggers out of the woods.
In the wake of one contestant's death, another one quits the show. A new clue leads the contestants to a hidden rifle, only to discover that one of them has secretly obtained it and hidden it away. Meanwhile, Esther manages to poison Victoria with some of the mushrooms, giving her prophetic visions, and Daniel and Sabina enter the forest at night.
The group's brief respite ends when someone sets the food shed on fire, destroying the stockpile. When the contestants receive a bow and arrows, Irene displays an unexpected gift for marksmanship and Johnny takes her hunting. Meanwhile, Natalie and Annie claim that they saw a tiger but the others suspect that it's a set-up by the producers.
Tensions rise as Carolina disappears in the woods. The next night, the sky ignites into green flames and Carolina staggers out of the woods, dazed and scratched. Meanwhile, Annie makes a move on Natalie, and Miljan makes a move on Esther.
In the wake of Carolina'a announcement, the group wonders what to do with her. Meanwhile, Irene is badly injured and Esther volunteers to disqualify herself to summon the helicopter, while Sabina tracks a strange girl through the forest.
When they learn that the base camp has been destroyed, the contestants realize that they are truly on their own. As they come to grips with their situation, Esther faces the consequences of her betrayal and Irene's condition gets worse. Meanwhile, Sam translates Miljan's book and finds a reference to the mysterious "Valleymen." When Daniel spots a distant light, the group must decide whether to risk seeking it out or staying where they are and defending their position.
The group heading toward the beacon faces the loss of one of their own if they don't find shelter amidst the sudden snow in the middle of summer. Meanwhile, back at the settlement, Sabina leads the others to the devastated base camp to get clothing for protection against the sudden temperature drop. However, Irene's condition continues to worsen and the situation looks hopeless unless they can get the revealer box open.
Johnny, Daniel, Joyce, and Sam continue searching for the beacon despite Sam's frostbitten foot, but disorientation sets in when the signal light goes out. Meanwhile, Neeko, Sabina, Annie, and Esther go into the woods to find the missing Irene and Miljan, and make a grisly discovery.
While Johnny, Sam, and Daniel explore the research station, trying to restore the power, they make several grisly discoveries. Meanwhile, at the settlement one of the missing contestants resurfaces and warns Sabina and Neeko that "they" are coming... and they're neither animal nor human.
The Evenki capture Neeko, Sabina, and Miljan, but reunite them with their friends. While the tribesmen explain that the contestants violated their enemy's territory, the group at the science center attempt to make contact with the outside world.
The contestants are reunited at the research center and wait for rescue, but the people that come for them prove less than friendly. After a daring escape, the contestants make it to the nearby town, only to face a betrayal from within and a surprise ending.
