Clive has finally managed become a silk, but his celebrations come to a halt after news comes through that the son of the head of chambers has been arrested for killing a police officer. Martha has to try and defend him but the evidence against him does not look good.

Martha and Clive find themselves on the opposing sides of a high profile assisted suicide case as a mother is accused of helping her severely paralyzed daughter to die. Martha has to fight for her client ignoring the moral arguments surrounding the case. Billy's position becomes compromised and there's a new opening for Head of Chambers.

She begins to feel more and more isolated as an angry Clive confronts her about the holes in the case. Martha soon begins to uncover the lies Sean has told her and has to turn to an old enemy to clear his name. Martha is shocked when the jury finally reveal their verdict. Billy's tribunal comes to a head.
