Roulette - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Oliver is drinking heavily and gambling away his money at the Roulette Casino. A woman in a red dress with a dragon tattoo comes over and introduces herself as Virginia. She offers Oliver a game that can satisfy him and when he agrees, has her choose from three overturned cups. The one he chooses has a red pill and she taunts him take it. When he hesitates, Victoria notes that he has nothing to lose. Oliver agrees and takes the pill, and then Victoria takes him out into the street. When Oliver wakes up later, he discovers himself wearing a white suit and locked in a coffin. The inside of the lid has the words “game over” written in red.

Clark comes home to find Lois doing her laundry. She wants to watch movies and Clark reluctantly agrees. As they start, Clark hears a cry for help in Metropolis. He claims he’s going to get popcorn and then slips away and rescues the victim at superspeed and then returns in a matter of seconds. However, he continues to listen for more emergencies while trying to watch the movie and Lois notices that he’s not paying attention.

Oliver finally breaks the coffin open and discovers he’s in a warehouse. He finds another coffin and hears someone screaming inside. The plate on the coffin reads “Alexander Luthor.” Oliver breaks open the coffin but finds nothing but a pair of loudspeakers. The man at the other end laughs mockingly and denies Oliver’s accusation that he’s the Toyman. The man informs Oliver that he doesn’t know the rules and can’t understand how to end the game without them. He informs Oliver that he’s one of the people that Oliver has ruined. Oliver’s abductor releases a dog into the warehouse through a window. As it attacks, Oliver escapes past it and runs to a car in the middle of the nearby yard. He gets in and locks the doors only to discover that a train is heading directly for him. Before he can get out, the train slams into the car.

Clark keeps answering emergencies while pretending to get snacks. He finally asks Lois why she’s there and she admits that it’s Oliver’s birthday. Every year since they met, they celebrated together. However, this year he has abandoned her without an explanation. She asks Clark if he knows why Oliver would forsake her but Clark lies and insists that everything is fine. However, he suggests that they go check up on Oliver.

In the morning, Oliver wakes up next to the totaled car. Somehow he was thrown clear. He goes to an outdoor phone and calls Chloe, but the (fake) operator tells him it won’t be that easy. As Oliver slams the phone down in frustration, he sees a red dragon tattoo on his wrist. He goes back to the Roulette Casino and finds Victoria drinking heavily. She kisses him so that she can whisper in his ear that “they” are watching and that if she doesn’t kill him, they’ll kill her too. Victoria explains that it’s nothing personal and she doesn’t know why her employer wants Oliver dead. Oliver admits that there are a lot of people in his life that want him dead. Men attack them and Oliver and Victoria knock them out and then flee into the streets. Someone opens fire and finally hit Victoria, killing her. The police arrive, find Oliver covered in blood, and taser him unconscious.

Clark and Lois arrive at Oliver’s penthouse and Lois notices a napkin with the Roulette logo on it. She checks Oliver’s laptop and discovers he’s been replaying the footage of the LuthorCorp gala where the Toyman laid his trap. She realizes that Oliver deliberately stepped off the panel believing it would kill him, and that Clark was there. She accuses Clark of lying to her when he said everything was fine with Oliver, and he insists that he did it to protect Oliver.

Oliver is taken to an interrogation room where the arresting officer accuses him of murdering Victoria. An FBI agent finally comes in and tells the cop to leave, and then explains that Oliver was set up. The whole thing is a scheme to distract Oliver while they hack his bank account and steal his entire fortune. The FBI agent provides Oliver with a laptop to enter his password and confirm his money is intact. The agent leaves and Oliver looks on in horror as his account is depleted in a matter of seconds. He runs to the door and finds it locked, and gas pumps into the room. Clark arrives, having used his superhearing to find Oliver, and knocks down the walls of the (fake) interrogation room. Oliver is back in the warehouse, and Clark explains that they are only a couple of blocks away from the casino. The entire thing was a setup to get his password.

At the Watchtower, Clark and Oliver tell Chloe what happened. She tracks Victoria via the computer and confirms her identity. Oliver insists on dealing with the situation on his own with his lawyers rather than reassume his Green Arrow identity. Oliver leaves and Chloe tells Clark that she accessed Oliver's laptop and checked the video footage of the gala. Alia, the Kryptonian female assassin who claimed to be from the future, was at the party. They see a symbol on her shoulder and Clark goes to the Fortress to get information from Jor-El.

As Lois tries to track down Oliver's GPS, she finds his car. Victoria confronts her and says Oliver gave it to her as a gift. When Lois refuses to back off, they fight and Victoria finally captures Lois.

An armed Oliver goes back to the casino and sees Victoria, her back turned to him. He prepares to shoot her but can't bring himself to do it. Oliver goes over to confront her and discovers it's Lois in a red dress, gagged and tied up. Victoria arrives with a gun and explains that once Lois got involved, she had to deal with the hand she was dealt. Oliver points out that Victoria could have killed them both with ease, but Victoria explains that she preferred to dispatch them both with styles. Oliver ducks behind a blackjack table and she fires until she runs out of bullets. Oliver goes for his gun only to discover Victoria is using Lois as a hostage. The mercenary has spread gasoline and is prepared to burn down the casino. She runs out through the kitchen and there's an explosion. Oliver hears Victoria call for help and finally decides to go to her. He finds her trapped under debris as the fire spreads. He insists on pulling off the debris and rescuing her, even though Victoria points out that he could easily have abandoned her. He refuses to let her die and as soon as he says that, Victoria easily frees herself. The flames, fueled by gas pipes, die down. Victoria explains that the person doing it to him, the person he destroyed, was himself. The lights come up and Oliver realizes he's in a huge set. Victoria tells him that she heard he was some kind of hero, and it's time to resurrect him.

Later, Oliver finds Chloe at a coffee shop and congratulates her on well she played the game. He realized she was the only person who knew everything that happened. Dinah, Victor, and Bart helped stage all the incidents and Chloe watched the situation. Chloe admits she set the whole thing up so that he could face his demons. She explains that Lois was accidentally involved when Victoria went off script, and loaded his gun with blanks just in case. Oliver wonders if Clark knew about it and Chloe points out that Clark would never risk what needed to be done. He thanks Chloe for saving his life and she insists that he saved himself.

Lois comes to see Oliver and asks what was going on. He claims Victoria was a psycho ex-girlfriend and apologies for involving Lois. She wonders why he didn't come to her and Oliver admits he was too proud and too scared. He just wanted everything to end and admits he didn't feel that way when he was with her. Lois assures him some things between them haven't changed and she'll always be there for him. She then starts their annual celebration of his birthday.

Clark returns and tells Chloe that Jor-El recognized Alia's symbol as a Kandorian family crest. There may be others and each one left a Kryptonian symbol marking their arrival. Chloe runs a check of satellite images and tells Clark that Oliver is back. He wonders what happened and Chloe keeps her answer vague. The computer turns up a match on dozens of symbols scattered across the planet.

Oliver is dressed as Green Arrow and watching over the city from a rooftop when Clark finds him. He assures Clark that he's back to help and Clark warns that the world may soon need all the help it can get.
