<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
On the Kandorian border, 20 years before the destruction of Krypton, the forces of Black Zero close in on the city as a medic gives the soldiers tattoos of their family insignia. Major Zod arrives and demands to know why he's wasting time. The medic explains he has everyone's blood except for Zod's. As he takes it, Zod says that they need to win the war and get back to their families. Jor-El arrives to stop the medic, telling him that he's putting an end to the project as part of his personal redemption. Zod orders the medic to obey and then orders his soldiers to head out and defeat Black Zero. As they go, Zod warns Jor-El that the Ruling Council won't back his him, but Jor-El refuses to let his life's work be used as an atrocity. Suddenly Kandor is enveloped in a nuclear holocaust and Zod, Jor-El, and the others can only watch as their city is destroyed. Jor-El warns Zod that there's nothing he can do.

On Earth, Zod tells his cloned troops that they can't remember what happened since the blood of their "parents" was taken just before Kandor's destruction. He will never forget and will never allow their birthright to be destroyed. He tells them that Jor-El stole their powers and now flaunts them all over the city while leaving his mark. Zod insists they will find Jor-El and force him to give them what is rightfully theirs, and then they will be gods.

At the Watchtower, Chloe is running computer checks when Clark arrives. He admits that he finally kissed Lois and she then immediately left town to get some space and think things through. Chloe isn't surprised, and then explains that her mole at LuthorCorp has learned that Tess has teams around the globe trying to find the Kandorians. One team is busy in the Turkish desert, and Chloe suggests that Clark ask Oliver to provide him with a jet to get there. Clark insists he'd rather do it himself, but before he can explain, Oliver arrives to offer his help. Clark reluctantly agrees.

Tess is in her car on the cellphone, demanding results from her team. She gets out and meets with Zod, who is contemplating another sign in Metropolis with the insignia of Jor-El on it. He received her message and decided to take her seriously after the death of his undercover agent. Zod tells her his faulty conclusion that Jor-El has somehow taken the Kandorians' powers and is using them as the Blur, and offers what she's always wanted: to work with at his side. She tells him she already has a team on it and will let Zod know when she's found Jor-El.

In the Turkish desert, Clark and Oliver arrive at Chloe's coordinates and Clark uses his x-ray vision to find a buried symbol and clear it with his superbreath. Clark's family shield is revealed. Clark finds a dog tag with the El insignia on it and realizes that his father is on Earth.

At the Kent farm, Jor-El arrives, dressed in local garb, and walks up the driveway to the house.

Later, Chloe arrives to take Shelby for a walk and finds Jor-El there. He introduces himself but insists that he has no son. Chloe shows him a photo of Clark but realizes that he's from the past. She tells Jor-El about Krypton's destruction, and that Clark is searching for the others. Jor-El warns that the Kandorians will be hard to find given that they're being led by Krypton's greatest tactical genius... and his best friend.

Jor-El is summoned before the Ruling Council and accused of treason. He explains that his technology was intended to preserve their soldiers, not create an army of clones He further objects that if the Orb is sent to Earth and the now-superhuman soldiers are unleashed, they will destroy Earth's inhabitants. The Ruling Council says they have no choice and order his execution. However, Zod arrives and demands to be heard. He insists that his success in defeating Black Zero pales in comparison to Jor-El's accomplishments, and Jor-El is the greatest among them. Zod insists that one more death will accomplish nothing. The Council takes his words under advisement while Jor-El nods his thanks to his friend. The Council agrees to spare Jor-El but tell him to complete the Orb and include the DNA of himself and Zod. In that way, the survivors will be led by two of their greatest heroes. As the Council departs, Jor-El acknowledges that he's in Zod's debt, and his friend tells him never to forget that.

Jor-El admits to Chloe that without Zod, neither he nor his son Kal-El would be there. Chloe tells him the rest of what happened with Zod.

As Clark and Oliver fly back to Smallville, Clark considers the fact that the Jor-El construct in the arctic never told him about his father being on Earth. Oliver admits he can relate to growing up without parents and says you never get a second chance to be with them, and that he'd go to Hell and back to be with his father again.

At the loft, Jor-El looks through Clark's relics of his life on Earth and Chloe arrives to assure him that Clark will soon be there. She assures him that the Kents were the best parents that Jor-El could hope for, and Jor-El explains that his father sent him to Earth as a rite of passage. When he was on Earth, Jor-El met Hyram Kent and sent Clark there. When Chloe wonders why Jor-El came to Smallville, he explains that he had fond memories of the place. However, he worries that he influenced Zod into becoming the man he became as well. They hear a noise below and Jor-El renders Chloe unconscious with a sleeper hold and then subdues two of the invading soldiers. However, a third one tasers him unconscious.

Tess' soldiers have Jor-El brought to the manor and she insists that she's a friend, and she's taken drastic measures to protect him and Clark. She explains that Zod doesn't know that Clark exists and he's safe for now. Jor-El wonders why she's involved and Tess explains that the Earth is doomed unless the Kandorians can help. When she says that she released them from the Orb, Jor-el explains that they are abominations who should never have been created, and will destroy the planet. Tess believes they can help if they turn out like Clark, but Jor-El warns that they're different from humans. He speaks of their sacred book, which talks of darkness within all humans. Tess asks him to help her protect Kal-El or Zod will find out about him, and says he'll have to impersonate the Blur to mislead Zod.

Clark finds the unconscious Chloe at the barn and she tells him what happened. she believes Jor-El had unfinished business with Zod and went to find him.

At the manor, Tess finds Zod waiting for her. He wants a progress report on the search for Jor-El and Tess says that she's getting closer. She shows him the photo of Jor-El in the Turkish desert when he appeared on Earth. Zod admires a glass of wine and talks of riddles revealed, and then tries to seduce Tess. She warns that she plans to keep their partnership strictly professional, and Zod leaves. As he goes, he reveals that he had his people take Jor-El from the cellar. However, once she's gone, Tess smiles in triumphant.

Chloe returns with Clark and Oliver to the Watchtower and explains that she wired the Kent farm after Doomsday's attack, while Clark was away. He points out that he's been home for weeks and she didn't say anything about them. She apologizes and plays back the tape, and they realize Jor-El rendered Chloe unconscious to protect her, and was subsequently captured by Tess' men. Oliver warns him not to confront Tess and offers to talk to her, and Chloe agrees. Clark ignores them and superspeeds away.

At their secret base, Zod's soldiers bring Jor-El before the major. Zod greets him and then demands that Jor-el give the Kandorians their powers. He points out that given what Jor-El did the last time they met, it's the least he could do.

On Krypton, Jor-El activates the crystal mechanism and creates the Orb, and then places a marking on it. Zod arrives and Jor-El explains that the crystal is complete. He has also prepared the Stones of Knowledge with the data of the 28 galaxies. Now the two of them only have to include their DNA. Zod secretly asks Jor-El to include the DNA from his dead son's hair, in defiance of the Council's orders. He begs Jor-El for his help and gives him the hair. Jor-El warns that it's not an exact science and insists they can't change the path. Zod angrily asks his friend how he can refuse after all he's done for Jor-El, and wonders what Jor-El would do in his place. Jor-El says that he can't and Zod warns that his friend is now as dead to him as his son.

Zod beats Jor-El and demands he display his powers, but Jor-El claims he used the blue kryptonite to take away his powers and those of the clones in the Orb. Zod doesn't believe him, pointing out that he's used his powers as the Blur, but Jor-El refuses to tell him what he did or how. Zod reminds him of his debt but Jor-El insists that Krypton is gone because Zod destroyed it. He led a military coup and razed the planet rather than accept defeat. Zod dismisses it as cheap morality and Jor-El admits that if he had given Zod his son back, he might not have destroyed Krypton. Jor-El says that he can understand Zod's pain over the loss of his son, and Zod realizes that Jor-El must have a son of his own, and that son is the Blur. Zod tells his troops to release Jor-El so he can lead them to the one who will give them their powers.

Clark storms into Tess' office and demands to know where Jor-El is. Tess feigns ignorance and claims the only alien she knows about is Clark. He grabs her by the throat and demands answers, and she points out he's revealed his true Kryptonian heritage. Tess assures him that she placed a tracking device on Jor-El's clothing so that she could find Zod and the others. Clark tells her to find Jor-El now and she locates him at the Kent farm.

Clark superspeeds to the farm and finds Jor-El on a hillside, dying of his wounds. Jor-El says that he's proud of him and then dies.

Later, Clark meets with Oliver and admits that he has nothing but empty feelings now. He looks at his father's identification tag and Oliver points out that Jor-El was a true hero, sacrificing himself to save Chloe. Clark believes he'll never live up to his father's accomplishments but Oliver thinks Clark has nothing to feel ashamed of. Chloe will use the Watchtower to figure out what really happened and Oliver assures Clark that he has his back, always. Clark vows to find his father's killer and bring him to justice.

At the Watchtower, Chloe reviews recordings from the Kent farm and discovers that he had a piece of technology and came to Smallville to get it.

At a hidden grave in the woods, Clark buries his father and burns the El symbol into his tombstone with his heat vision. He says that he can't save Zod because he knows what he becomes. He's unaware that Zod is watching him from the woods.
