Lois gets Clark to help her peer over the wall of the new R.A.O. Inc., construction site and find out why they're working overtime to complete their tower project. Lois falls and lands in Clark's arms, and then tells him they're moving in high-tech equipment. She figures that they're hiding something but Clark suggests they drop it. Lois wonders if he knows something she doesn't, but he suggests they should enjoy Valentine's Day. She dismisses it as a corporate-create holiday and admits that when she's embraced it in the past, things have gone bad. A woman dressed as Cupid hands out chocolates and blows some glittery dust on them. Clark's eyes briefly glow blue.
The couple returns to the
Daily Planet and Clark suggests that they might have a more traditional relationship. When he says those words, Lois' eyes glow blue. The city editor comes in and tells her that the R.A.O. ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place in two days. Realizing that things are coming to a head, Clark goes to investigate. Lois willingly tells him to do whatever he needs to and she'll support him. Once Clark goes, Lois tells the editor that she needs to spend her time at home supporting Clark, and quits.
Clark goes to Watchtower and Chloe figures his date didn't go well if he's visiting her. He asks for the false ID materials he asked her to provide for the Kandorians. Chloe isn't happy with him helping the Kandorians, given what they saw of the future where the soldiers rule the world. She reminds him that one of them killed Jor-El and it would be safer to send them to the Phantom Zone. Clark insists that he needs to give them a second chance, and tells Chloe to focus on protecting his back. Her eyes glow blue and Chloe vows she'll protect him no matter what it takes.
Clark takes the papers to Faora and Alia. They thank him for giving him the chance to have a civilian life, and Clark asks them who killed Jor-El. They warn that if he pushes the matter, Zod's loyal followers may turn against Clark.
Clark returns home to the farm and discovers Lois… dressed in a 50s dress and cooking supper. She tells him she's staying in the guest room until they get engaged. They sit down to an inedible meal, which Clark secretly feeds to Shelby. She explains that she's just going along with Clark's wish for a traditional relationship and she's quit the newspaper. When Clark says she can't, Lois insists despite his wishes and says they need to work on their wedding vows. Clark quickly makes an excuse to leave and go investigate.
Tess is enjoying a champagne bath when Zod enters her bathroom. He tells her that her security guards are otherwise engaged and she suggests that he join her. Zod notes that she's already in bed with Kal-El and warns her that he's the wrong choice. The Kandorian boasts that he's about ready to complete the Tower of Rao, and Tess notes that she's the only one who can access the satellites. He takes her champagne glass and notes that he now has his fingerprints, and then observes that she hasn't told him about Clark's plans for the Kandorians. Tess tells him that the Kandorians will turn to Clark for future because he represents a future free of bloodshed. Zod figures that Tess plans to give the Kandorians their power so they can save Earth, turn the reins over to Clark, and get rid of Zod. He warns her that once he regains his powers when the satellite goes online, she'll need mercy.
Chloe goes to the farm and finds Lois scrubbing the floor. She tries to get her cousin out, warning that Clark's romances in the past haven't gone well. Chloe notes that Lois once betrayed the Blur on national television by revealing her connection. Lois admits it was a mistake and Chloe tells her that Clark will eventually realized Lois is a scared kid underneath who runs away, and the best thing she can do is leave Clark.
Clark retraces his and Lois' footsteps from the previous night and talks to the Cupid woman, now dressed normally. When he notices the glowing fairy dust, he gets her to confirm that she got it from a quarry in Smallville. Clark gets a call from Lois and returns to the Kent barn to find her sobbing pathetically. She tells him that things can't work out between them and she has no idea how to have a relationship, traditional or otherwise. Clark tries to assure her that something else is going on, but Lois admits she's been making a fool of herself long enough and it hurts too much to be around him. She declares that she's leaving Clark and Smallville. Clark promises that they'll be together and kisses her, and she falls into his love and announces that she can move into his bedroom now.
Clark goes to Watchtower and discovers that Chloe has shut Emil out of all the systems. Emil is desperately trying to access the computers and Clark tells him to relax. Emil immediately becomes sedate and tranquil. When Clark tries to undo his statement, nothing happens. Emil suggests that Clark relax and use his powers on his own behalf, and Clark gets an idea.
Lois takes Martha's wedding dress out of the closet and then calls her with the news. She puts it on and then starts calling all of her friends and family to make plans for the upcoming wedding.
Clark goes to the construction site to accuse Zod of Jor-El's murder. Zod insists he never would have killed his friend, and Clark uses his new power to ask the question. Zod says that he didn't kill Clark's father but he knows who did: Tess Mercer. He tells Clark to take revenge in the Kryptonian way by killing her, but Clark refuses. Zod says that he tortured Jor-El, but the man never gave up Clark's location and died protecting Clark. Clark says that he wants revenge and admits that sometimes he wants to become a killer. His eyes glow blue as his power affects himself and he turns and leaves.
Chloe breaks into Tess' office and discovers that she's tapped into Chloe's surveillance cameras of the Kent farm. When Tess arrives, Chloe says that she plans to infect her computer with a super virus, but Tess warns that it will expose Clark. She explains that the Solar Tower will go on in line with 18 hours and give the Kandorians their powers. Clark will be able to rule over the Kandorians, but they have to work together. Chloe attacks her and takes the gun. The two of them struggle and Tess gains the upper hand. She prepares to shoot Chloe but Clark suddenly arrives at superspeed and takes her to the roof. He uses his heat vision to surround her with a ring of fire and prepares to kill her. Tess reminds him that she's never told his secret to anyone, but Clark figures she plans to sell him out to Zod. She insists that he has to join with the Kandorians, but Clark tells her that the tower will strip him of his powers. Tess tries to convince him that she didn't know that, but Clark prepares to kill her. Chloe arrives with kryptonite, and the radiation undoes the affects of the mind control on both of them.
Alia meets with Zod. She's holding a gun and apologizes to him, admitting that she killed Jor-El in the name of Rao. Alias insists that he would have destroyed them as abominations. She says that justice may be served and gives him the gun as she kneels before him. Zod takes the gun, hesitates, and then shoots her dead.
Later, Clark calls Martha and tells her there was a mistake about the engagement. Lois prepares to call her family and apologizes for her behavior. She admits she has to trust in their relationship and their feelings for each other. Clark says that things are okay, but Lois wonders if he would tell her if he has any secrets. He assures her that she did the right thing by protecting the Blur, but Lois worries that her big mouth will ruin their relationship. Clark assures her that it won't be that easy to get rid of him.
The Kandorians give Alia a traditional Kryptonian funeral. Afterward, Zod admits to Clark that he killed her. Clark accuses him of going too far, but Zod notes that he's rejecting Kryptonian ways. Since Clark was too weak to take revenge, Zod had to kill one of his own soldiers to get justice for Jor-El. Clark insists it isn't his kind of justice, but Zod warns him he'll soon have to choose which side he's on.
At Watchtower, Clark and Chloe examine the schematics of the Solar Tower. He wonders why Chloe didn't let him kill Tess, and Chloe explains that she protected Clark by stopping him from killing, so they'd have him as an inspiration. Clark tells her who killed Alia, and they realize that the future they saw is changing. Clark realizes there's only one way to be sure.
As Zod unveils the Solar Tower to the world, Clark uses his heat vision on it from a neighboring building. As the structure goes down in flames, Zod realizes what has happened and who is responsible.
