Lois runs to Clark as he falls to the ground, the blue kryptonite dagger embedded in his chest.
Clark finds himself in a cornfield, his chest healed and the dagger gone. He follows a trail through the cornfield and discovers crows perched on a post, the one he was hung up on as a teenager. The crows fly away and a tombstone with Clark's name on it rises out of the ground. Jor-El calls out to him and tells him that he is suspended between life and death. Clark's birth father warns that the stone will be all that's left of Clark when he dies, and his sacrifice has left humanity vulnerable to future threats. The heroes that Clark left will have to face the greatest evil without him. Clark insists that his fate is to be a symbol of hope, but Jor-El says that he chose the martyr's path and he doesn't deserve a second chance. Clark smashes the tombstone and calls for Jor-El, but gets no answer. He demands that Jor-El send him back, but gets no response. A figure in a white suit walks through the cornfield toward Clark, who realizes that it's Lex Luthor.
As the sun rises, Lois pulls the dagger out of Clark's chest. He starts to wake up and she runs to hide. Unaware that Lois is there, Clark bathes in the sunlight, recovering his powers and healing his wound. Finally he superspeeds away as Lois smiles in triumph.
Chloe returns to Watchtower and watches the footage of Oliver being attacked. A man is on the tape and addresses the camera, warning that he and his people are coming for Chloe and the rest. Chloe takes out a hidden key, but before she can use it, Clark arrives and explains what happened. He explains that he suffered a near-death experience, and Jor-El warned him of a greater evil coming. Clark tells her that he saw Lex, and that Fate warned that Lex would be his ultimate opponent. Chloe checks the old Luthor projects and finds nothing, but Clark suggests that Lex reactivated something before digital records came into vogue. Clark goes to the
Daily Planet to check the original paper files.
Lois is at the
Planet, looking at Chloe's old files and realizing that Lana, Chloe, and Pete Ross all knew Clark's secret. Clark comes in and Lois hastily shuts down the computer. He asks why she isn't in Africa, and Lois says she's postponed it indefinitely. Clark wonders if it's because of the Blur, and she says that the hero needs her after all, and passionately kissed her. Clark changes the subject and says he's on a story. Lois drops her pen so that Clark can go through the files at superspeed without suspecting she knows his secret. Before he goes, Lois says that she needs to talk to him later at the barn, and Clark says he'll be there.
Clark finds a file on Cadmus Laboratories and asks Chloe to check on it. She informs him that she's at JSA headquarters. The voice of Fate whispers to her and Chloe says that she can't let Clark stop her. She goes to a display cabinet and uses the key to open the case and take out the Helm. She asks it to show her where Oliver is, and it warns her that she will have to sacrifice herself to save the Oliver. She agrees and the Helm wraps itself around her head.
Clark arrives seconds later and finds Chloe unconscious on the floor, the Helm laying nearby.
The man from the tape is viciously beating Oliver. He notes that when mysterious individuals were carving symbols around the world, Oliver's satellite was the only one that wasn't shut down. The symbols are similar to the ones the Blur wears, and the man wants to know what Oliver's connection to the hero is. Oliver insists that he's a good guy. When the man demands an explanation, Oliver tells him that they were aliens, and the man starts beating him again and then uses electricity.
Tess wakes up in a laboratory and discovers that some plastic-like substance has been applied to the wound on her face. She peels it off and discovers that her injury is healed. Looking around, Tess determines that she's in a Cadmus laboratory. Exploring she finds several cylinders holding mutated human beings. They are labeled "Lx" and are still alive. Tess hears a noise from one chamber and opens it, and finds a young red-haired boy inside. He says that his name is Alexander.
Alexander explains that the other Lxs are his brothers, clones that were created from Lex's DNA. They were made to heal the creator, but the process caused many of them to age or become sick. Tess hears a pounding noise from another door and opens it, ignoring Alexander's warning that the "bad one" is inside. The clone inside gets out and grabs Tess, and explains that he has all of Lex's memories and emotions. His nose starts bleeding and Tess manages to break free. She tells Alexander to hide as the escaped clone grabs a propane torch prepares to burn down the lab.
Clark takes Chloe to Watchtower and Dr. Hamilton tries to revive her. When Clark pleads with her to fight, Chloe wakes up and tells Clark what she did, and how she saw the future where Clark is the world's hero, and he's not in black. She tells him that she saw Cadmus burning and he as to go. As Clark superspeeds away, he doesn't hear Chloe say "goodbye."
Lois goes to the barn to wait and looks at Clark's mementoes. She finds the costume that Martha made for Clark, and admires the colors. However, the evil Lex clone comes in and knocks her out.
Clark arrives at Cadmus and finds the lab in flames, and the clones dead. Tess is tied up and explains that the Lex clone left her to give Clark a message to meet him at Lawson's Field so that the two of them could finally face off.
Lois finds herself tied up on a post in the cornfield. The Lex clone has painted a red S on her chest, and explains that it was a mark of shame when the football players painted it on Clark ten years ago. The clone insists that since he rescued Clark that day, all Clark has ever done is betray him. The Lex clone takes out a lighter and informs Lois that he will destroy her, and her death will break Clark.
Clark arrives at Lawson's Field to meet the Lex clone, who explains that Lex died two years ago in the truck explosion. The clone reminds Clark of how he saved Lex when his car went off the bridge, and Clark was overcome by pride. He tells Clark that he's his own worst enemy, but Clark insists he's nothing like the clone. The Lex clone disagrees, saying they are like brothers and that's why Clark could never stop him. Clark responds to its taunts and starts to choke the clone, but realizes that he's dying. The clone says that the process is killing him, but he will have his revenge. He's planted a bomb to drop the
Daily Planet globe into traffic. Clark has to choose between catching it, or letting Lois die. The clone tells Clark where it can find Lois and then dies.
At superspeed, Clark goes to the cornfield and whips out the flames while moving invisibly fast, and then carries Lois to safety. As he leaves, Lois looks after him, realizing what has happened. Clark then runs to Metropolis, leaps into the air, catches the falling globe, and puts it back on the building as the crowd cheers.
Clark returns to the barn and takes out Martha's gift. Before he can don it, a Kryptonian teleportation device hidden in a book sends him and the costume to the Fortress. Jor-El says nothing, and Clark says that he managed to save everyone and became the hero Jor-El intended him to be. Jor-El is unimpressed, saying that Clark suffers from pride and vanity. He tells Clark that Clark is the greatest threat, and the darkness will eventually consume him. When Clark wonders why he was given a second chance, Jor-El says that it wasn't his decision to give him back his life. He tells Clark that he will never be Earth's savior, and the Fortress goes dark.
Oliver's captor slaps him awake and informs him that he's releasing him. Oliver warns him that he'll hunt him down, but the man says that Oliver has no idea who he is, while he knows that Oliver is Green Arrow.
Alexander is playing with Lex's lead soldiers, while Tess brings him a glass of milk. They burn one figurine, the one representing the dead clone.
Oliver is released, unaware that he's being exchanged for Chloe.
In Africa, Lois looks at a photo of her and Clark together and cries.
Clark goes to the farm and finds Lois' letter to him saying that she's chosen Africa after all. As he lets the letter blow away on the wind, he sees someone working on the fence: his adopted father, Jonathan Kent. Jonathan says that he's been watching over him, and admits that Clark is so much more than what he raised him to be. He tells Clark to ignore what Jor-El said, but Clark says that he destroyed a building and know what it means to kill. Jonathan admits that they're all confronted with trials, and how they react shows what kind of person they are. When Clark says that Jonathan wasn't like that, Jonathan says that his own fury drove him to kill Lionel. He tells Clark that when they make sacrifices, they all lose a little something, and Clark has lost more than anyone. Jonathan wishes that he could have a second chance, and points out that Clark has that second chance. When Clark disagrees, Jonathan tells him to prove Jor-El wrong. However, he warns Clark that Jor-El was right that something evil is coming, and Clark will be tested like never before. Clark asks him what is coming, but Jonathan disappears without answering.
A dark shadow spreads across the church tower where Clark fought Zod, and materializes into a huge figure seemingly made of stone, with glowing red eyes.
At the Fortress, Clark's blue-and-red uniform lays in a cabinet... waiting.
