Icarus - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Lois arrives for a date with Clark and apologizes for being late, and Clark suggests they go to a fancy restaurant. She notes that they'd be lucky to get a reservation, unaware that Clark has already made them for his proposal. However, Lois warns that with the new VRA curfew, they won't have time in any case, and then puts a pro-hero poster on the new VRA curfew sign. As they talk about the VRA, Clark notices a man walking by with flowers and gets an idea. Lois suggests that they snuggle at home, but Clark says there's an emergency and races off. A few seconds later, he calls the nearby phone booth. When Lois answers it, he tells her to look up. Flower petals fall from the sky and Clark proposes to her. Lois accepts and they kiss.

The next day, Lois arrives at the Planet and has to pass through the new security scans. As she leaves a message for Oliver about the engagement, she finds a congratulatory letter from Chloe in her mail. She remembers talking with Chloe about her cousin's relationship with Oliver, and that Lana wasn't the one fated to be in Clarks' life. In the envelope is something borrowed for the wedding, a necklace. Cat comes in and notices Lois' engagement ring, and admits her marriage didn't work out well. She then tells Lois that she'll have a lot more time now that she won't be writing pro-hero stories. Tess comes in and Cat blurts out the engagement, and Tess tells Lois to be at Watchtower that night at 9 to update her retinal scan.

At 9, Lois arrives and discovers that Clark is scheduled for the same time. They go in and discover that their friends have set up a surprise party. Oliver offers his congratulations, but says he can't be at the wedding since he's on the government's list as a publicly-identified terrorist. Clark is disappointed, since he planned to ask Oliver to be his best man, Oliver agrees, and Carter and Emil come over to offer their congratulations. Meanwhile, Tess and Courtney admire Lois' engagement ring, and Carter warns Oliver that no relationship is immune from loss. Oliver offers a toast to the happy couple and everyone joins in.

On his way home, Oliver hears a scream and goes to investigate. He fends off a mugger, who flees into a nearby crowd. They recognize Oliver, and the mugger accuses Oliver of attacking him. The crowd attacks Oliver and beat him down, while the mugger runs off. Carter and Courtney arrive to fend them off, but the crowd prepares to stone them. Courtney uses her Star Staff to create a light blast to cover their escape

VRA soldiers break into Oliver's office at Luthorcorp.

The next morning, Lois and Clark arrive at the Kent farm, and Lois it's the first party where they didn't have to hide Clark's secret. Clark is worried that their relationship may suffer for his heroic duties, but Lois assures her that she's fine with taking an occasional backseat. In response, Clark assures her that they'll always be together. Lois turns on the news and hears about the assault on Oliver. Lois tells Clark to and deal with it.

As Tess has breakfast, Cat complains that she squashed her story, and their losing sales. She warns that someone will notice if Tess doesn't get with the majority view. VRA officers arrive and their leader, Shepard, tell her that she's being brought in for questioning.

More VRA officers go to the hospital and take Emil into custody. Other soldiers break into the Kent home but there's no sign of Clark.

At Watchtower, Clark arrives to find Oliver, Courtney, and Carter trying to deal with the situation, with Black Canary on teleconference. Oliver admits they wanted to give Clark and Lois some time alone and didn't call him. General Slade Wilson, now sporting an eye patch, comes on TV to claim he was attacked by a vigilante, and say that the terrorist must pay for their crimes. They figure that they have to maintain radio silence until they deal with Slade, who knows their secret identities, and Clark shuts down Watchtower.

At the [em]Planet[/em], Lois gets into an elevator and finds Slade's aide, Trotter, waiting for her. Trotter takes Lois to Tess' office, where the VRA are holding Emil and Tess. Lois starts to call Clark, but Tess and Emil secretly warn her that the VRA have bugged their phones.

Trotter begins her interrogation with Emil, and notes that he has remarkable flexibility in his job at Metropolis General. He claims that he works in free clinics in his spare time, but she notes that he's on Oliver's payroll and they want Oliver's friends, not Oliver.

Next, Trotter talks to Lois and hints that Clark might be jealous of her relationship with the Blur. When Lois denies talking to the Blur, Trotter notes that Lois quotes the hero in her articles, and demands to know Clark Kent can be found.

Clark breaks into Slade's office and discovers that Carter had the same idea. As they search, Clark worries that he may not be able to keep his promise to Lois to give her a relationship outside of the Blur. Oliver breaks in, and admits that they're not setting a very good example for the younger heroes. Carter warns that he's seen similar levels of hatred before, and each time an opposing force of brightness rose. Clark says that he has a place where he can send Slade without harming him, until they can deal with him permanently.

Trotter interrogates Lois, who wonders why the VRA isn't publicizing the faces of the heroes. In response, Trotter explains they want to keep public opinion on their side until they can prove the vigilantes are who the government claims they are.

Next, Trotter talks to Tess, who isn't intimidated. Tess insists that she has no connection with Oliver besides a business relationship. Trotter suggests that they're still romantically involved, and demands to know where the vigilantes are.

Lois goes through Tess' office and finds the secret slide leading to the basement. Using it, Lois tries to make her escape but runs into Cat. She tries to bluff it out without success, and accuses Cat of selling them out. When Cat tries to go to the authorities, Lois warns her that the vigilantes are heroes, and that the Blur saved Cat's life twice without her knowing her. The only reason Cat's son still has a mother is because a "vigilante" saved her life. A VRA sergeant, Garcia, comes down and Lois hides. Cat hesitates and then tells him that she hasn't seen Lois. As Lois leaves, Cat tells her that she overheard Trotter planning to use Oliver to track down the others.

At Slade's office, Oliver checks the computer and tells Clark that Slade has initiated Operation Icarus. It's a blacklist of vigilantes and supporters scheduled for arrest and interrogation. Oliver accesses the video files, including the ones at the Planet. Clark superspeeds there, while Carter and Oliver figure that Slade has accessed every camera in the city, including the one in Oliver’s office.

Trotter demands to know why Shepard and his men haven't found Lois. She has him take Tess and Emil to the secure location. He takes them through the steam tunnels, but Clark arrives and knocks out the soldiers.

Lois goes to Oliver's office, and discovers that Slade is waiting for her. She refuses to tell him where Clark is, and he slaps her down. She tries to hit him, but Slade easily blocks her attack and says that he's been given a second chance to take care of the vigilantes. He prepares to shoot her, and she slams a paperweight into his head. The wound heals instantly and he knocks her out. As Slade aims, a fully armored Hawkman smashes through the window. Hawkman deflects his bullets and Slade draws a sword. The two men fight, mace against sword, but Slade's regenerative abilities give him the edge. After striking a gas pipe, he manages to stab Hawkman through the chest and unmask him. A spark from an overturned lamp ignites the gas, blasting Slade back and knocking Lois out through the window. Hawkman, his wings flaming, soars down after her and manages to catch her.

Clark arrives at Luthorcorp as Slade emerges, unscathed. Slade says that they don't need to fight, and that Clark should join him. Clark refuses, and Slade admits that he named Icarus because of Clark's faith in his own invincibility. He tells Clark that Hawkman and Lois are dead, and Clark uses a Phantom Zone crystal to send Slade into extra-dimensional exile.

Searching, Clark finds Carter lying on the street below Luthorcorp. He opens his wings to reveal Lois, unharmed. Carter is beyond help, and Clark regrets his death. The fallen hero insists that it's all of their fight, and Clark can't always be there. Now he'll be with Shayera, and tells Clark to hold onto Lois because they can't fight with emptiness in their hearts. Carter assures Clark that he has all the help he'll need, and then dies.

Later, the assembled heroes take Carter to Egypt to bury him in a pyramid. As they mourn their comrade, a crystal pyramid emerges from the ground and emits a burst of energy. When it fades, all of the heroes are sprawled on the ground.
