Lois is unpacking her and Clark's belongings in their new apartment, and placing her mother's blue bird on the windowsill, when Clark arrives and asks where to put her Whitesnake throw pillow. She points out that the pillow comes with her, and Clark suggests he unpack at superspeed. Lois says she wants to take the time to find the perfect spot for everything. Tess calls to tell them that Slade Wilson has turned up on a street corner, unconscious. Since there's only one way out of the Phantom Zone, where Slade was exiled, Clark realizes that someone from the House of El must have released him.
At Watchtower, Tess scans the Zone crystal and prepares to activate it so Clark can go there and figure out what's going on. Oliver arrives and insists on going, and Tess says that she asked Oliver to go with Clark because Oliver is more experienced with being powerless. Clark refuses and Tess gives him a wrist communicator that will allow him communicate with Watchtower once he enters the Zone. Tess then activates the crystal and Clark starts to go through... and Oliver jumps through with him. They find themselves in the barren wasteland of the Zone and they begin exploring. The duo soon find skulls with Omega brands, posted as a warning by the Zoners, and Clark warns that Darkseid has been all across the galaxy and beyond. They get to the gateway and discover that the El crystal is gone. Without it, they can't return.
Zoners attack them and Tess loses contact just as Lois arrives at Watchtower. She demands to know if Clark is safe, but Tess admits that she's lost contact with Clark and Oliver. When Lois asks what they do next, Tess admits that they don't have a backup plan.
The Zone prisoners bring Oliver and Clark to their ruler, a hooded figure seated on a throne. The figure removes his hood to reveal the face of Zod. He commands them to kneel before him, and then sends Oliver away and beats Clark. He taunts Clark in his powerless condition, and Clark vows to find a way to defeat him. However, Zod explains that when he arrived there, he met the original Zod's phantom and the two of them merged. He explains that the Kandorians sent him there, and mocks Clark for using Jor-El's prison to exile Slade Wilson without a trail. Clark realizes that Zod sent Slade through to lure Clark to the Zone, and notices that Zod has the console crystal. Zod explains that he was able to use it because Clark used his own blood to heal Zod on Earth, and he insists that they are both Kryptonian, and have the same instincts. He invites Clark to join him as leader of the Zone, and asks Clark if he's Cain or Abel. Clark points out that he saved Zod, and Zod beats him again.
Zod had his men bring Clark to an arena where two men are fighting to the death. Oliver is kept in a cage nearby, and warns Clark that they expect him to fight to the death. Clark watches as one of the fighters kills the others, and then turns to fight him. Using a discarded shield and then a helmet, Clark manages to defeat the warrior, but refuses to kill him. Zod tells the crowd that they answer failure with death, and then steps forward and kills the defeated warrior himself. He then warns Clark that the next time he fails to kill his opponent, he'll die as well.
Tess claims that she can't access the Zone crystal, and keeps checking her watch. Lois wonders why she's so nervous and points out that she's been to the Zone, and she knows how dangerous it is there. She sends Tess to check the crystal laser and then accesses Tess' computer and confirms that she's planning to destroy the crystal with superheat in just over two hours.
Clark is thrown into a cage next to Oliver, and explains that he and Tess put a plan into motion to destroy the crystal if he couldn't return. He admits that he didn't tell Lois, and he knows everything Jor-El wrote about the Zone.
Tess realizes that Lois has learned of her plan, and explains that Clark knew the risks but was willing to sacrifice himself to keep any Zoners from coming to Earth. Lois accuses her of betraying their friends, and Tess insists that she's following Clark's orders. When she refuse to back down, Lois draws a gun but Tess insists that she has to accept Clark's sacrifices. In response, Lois says that being a hero's wife means never accepting defeat.
Zod has Oliver brought to him. When Oliver angrily denies him, Zod says that's the darkness that he's looking for in Oliver. He explains that Darkseid came looking for him in the Zone and offered Zod dominion of the Zone in return for eliminating Clark. When Oliver says that they defeated Darkseid and his minions, Zod warns that there are millions on Earth marked by Darkseid, and Oliver is one of them, and has been since he first gave in to anger and revenge after his parents were killed. Zod claims that if Clark knew, he would lose his trust in Oliver and eventually cast his friend aside, just as Zod was cast aside. The Kryptonian offers Oliver the chance to rule at his side as a brother, He release Oliver from his shackles, and Oliver agrees to join forces with Zod. Zod congratulates him and tells him that he has to draw on his darkness or die.
Clark is given a sword and released into the ring, and finds himself facing Oliver. Oliver attacks full out and Clark defends himself as best he can. he finally fights back, knocking Oliver to the ground and leaping in for the kill. Oliver holds up his sword and stabs Clark in the chest. Rising, Oliver prepares to deliver the finishing blow, but Zod steps forward and demands the privilege for himself. As he raises his sword, Oliver grabs his hand and Clark snatches the crystal from around Zod's neck. As the gate opens to Earth, Clark heals in the sun's rays and tells Zod that he will have no more second chances. He then destroys the crystal and departs for Earth, leaving the Zone residents trapped for all eternity.
Later, Tess tends to Oliver's wounds at Watchtower, and Oliver congratulates Clark on his plan. Clark says that the plan worked because he knew that Oliver would follow through no matter what Zod said to him. Tess goes to get Emil and Oliver asks Clark what they would do if one of their own were infected with the darkness. Clark says that they would have to lock up their teammate since there doesn't appear to be any cure. He warns Oliver that Zod knows how to take a person's greatest fear and uses them, and Oliver redirects the conversation to Lois. he tells Clark to go see Lois because she's no doubt worried sick about him.
Clark arrives at the apartment and discovers that everything is unpacked and put in place. Lois comes out, sees him, and embraces him, and he asks why she went ahead and unpacked everything. When Clark notes that she couldn't have done it in the few hours he was gone, Lois explains that Clark has been gone for three weeks of Earth time. She tells him that the League felt it was too risky to send anyone else in, and she and Tess spent the time at Watchtower together trying to find a way to get them back. Clark points out that Tess was supposed to blow up the gate after three hours, and Lois tells him that she convinced Tess to see things her way. Clark says he was trying to protect her by keeping her in the dark, but Lois says she'd rather be with him than suffering alone. He assures her that he'll try to show her more of his Kryptonian side in the future, and Lois explains that it's two day until the wedding. She admits that she couldn't bring herself to postpone it and accept that Clark might not come back, and Clark promises that there's nothing that could keep him from walking down the aisle with her.
Later, Oliver meets with Tessa, who has been deciphering the Veritas journals and comparing them to the notes in Carter Hall's diary. They reveal the location of a constellation, the Bow of Orion, which is associated with a place on the Celtic coast. Oliver lies and says that Hawkman was looking for the weapon of the hunter Orion, who defeated Darkseid centuries ago. Now he plans to go find the Bow. Tess says that he doesn't have to look for it alone, and Oliver asks her to trust him and not ask questions. She agrees and Oliver leaves. he goes to a church and says a prayer, and then walks out past an angel statue... which weeps blood.
