  Episode Quotes
Lex: This is just a delusion.
Lillian Luthor: Like last time? What was it then that brought you to me? Ohhh, yes, you were shot coming out of a meeting with the man you hired to destroy Jonathan Kent's reputation, so you could become senator. How'd that turn out, by the way?
Lex: If you are really my dead mother, wouldn't you know?
Lillian Luthor: It was a rhetorical question, Alexander – of course I know.

Lana: Lex...
Lex: Is this gonna be another apology?
Lana: Well, they don't make a card for 'Sorry, I got you killed'.

Lex: (to Lana) You didn't want to lie to me but you broke into my house and tried to steal from me? You're acting like a junkie trying to find her next fix.

Lionel: Your carriage awaits, Senator.
Martha: Goodnight, Clark.
Lionel: Goodnight... Clark.

Chloe: Well, I was looking for Lana and I found your... body. I figured if the green stuff killed you, the other one would bring you back.
(Lex looks at Chloe in disbelief)
Chloe: What? You were already dead, I figured I'd take a chance!

Lillian Luthor: Stay with me, Alexander. Don't let the blood wash away what's left of your soul.
Lex: What are you talking about? What blood?
Lillian Luthor: Of all the people you're going to murder.

Lance: (to Lana) Do you know how much trouble you caused me? (sneers) You freshmen.

Jonathan: I am so very proud that I died protecting you.
Clark: Protecting me from what?
Jonathan: Lionel Luthor, Clark. He knows your secret, he knows everything. You can't stay here, son. You've gotta keep your mother safe. You've gotta keep the whole world safe.
Clark: No, dad...
Jonathan: Clark...
Clark: Not without you. Dad, I need you, I cannot do this without you.
Jonathan: Yes, you can.

Lex: Crossing over was a very enlightening experience.
Lana: What did you see?
Lex: My mother.
Lana: What'd she say?
Lex: She said that... she's very proud of the man I'm becoming.

Jonathan: I'll always be with you, son. Always!

Chloe: Fast but oddly formal. Usually, when I say it's urgent, you rip in here without the least regard for my privacy.
Clark: I didn't want to disturb you.
Chloe: Don't worry, Lana's not here.

Martha: But Lionel, I hope you're not expecting something on a personal level. The two of us will never be anything more than friends.
Lionel: I understand.

Lex: (to Lana) I think maybe it's time we both stop trying to hold onto the people we've lost and start turning to the ones we still have in our lives.

Ally: Chill. Lana hasn't been partying and she isn't moping around mourning her high school sweetheart, either.
Chloe: Well, she isn't exactly acting like herself. And the two of you look like the poster children for the Betty Ford clinic.

Lance: You stole a Porsche?
Lana: No, I borrowed it from a friend.
Lex: And he wants it back.
Lana: Lex?
Lex: Cool thing about expensive cars is they all come with GPS tracking.

Lillian Luthor: You ignored everything I showed you. The life you could've had... if only you had made a different choice.
Lex: And what choice would that be?
Lillian Luthor: You think the path you've chosen isn't going to hurt? It will, more than you can ever imagine. But you're not the only one that's going to suffer.

Jonathan: (to Clark) You're a symbol of peace. You're a symbol of justice. And now it's time for you to go.

Clark: Lana... all I want for you is to be happy.
Lana: I will be.

  Episode Goofs
In the scene with Jonathan Kent, Clark starts talking about his guilt and the bargain he made with Jor-El as if his father didn't know, but he told him in the episode Solitude.

  Cultural References
The Lex/Lillian scene made an entire reference to Lex's future as one of the world's greatest villains.

The Clark/Jonathan Kent scene is reminiscent of Adventures of Superman #500, when Jonathan Kent 'died' and saw Superman beyond the grave.

Jonathan: This is your destiny, son. You are going to touch the lives of so many people. Not just as a man but as a... as a symbol.
A direct nod to what Clark will become when he dons the cape of Superman.

The main plot in this episode is similar to that of the 1990 sci-fi movie, Flatliners, where medical students experiment with death. Each has their heart stopped before being revived again and old memories are unearthed that continue to haunt them in the present. The experiments get more and more dangerous as each student goes under for longer than the previous 'death' as they seek the answers they're looking for but the more time they spend dead, the less likely they'll make it back alive.
