Martha's chief of staff, Naomi Van Horn, is at home making supper for her foster daughter Maddie. Maddie, an apparent mute, refuses to come to supper because she's busy drawing and as they struggle over her notebook, a water pitcher on the table shatters for no apparent reason. Naomi realizes that Maddie did it with her mind and goes to call the foster home. Maddie goes up to the room and all of the glass in the kitchen starts to vibrate and then shatter. Naomi looks in horror as the razor-sharp shards fly toward her.
Clark brings Maddie to the Kent house and talks with a deputy. Martha knows about Maddie's history from Naomi, and tells Clark that Maddie hasn't spoken since the age of 3 when her birth mother died. Martha wants to call Lionel, who set up the adoption, but Clark isn't so sure. He tries to get Maddie to talk by discussing her picture of a tree, but the best she'll do is smile.
Lex and Lana come back from dinner to Lana's dorm room. Lana offers to return his files on the Black Ship but Lex tells her about Fine and his connection to the government and says he's fine with Lana keeping the information. They start to draw closer just as Chloe comes in. Realizing she's interrupting, Chloe awkwardly leaves.
The next morning, Clark shows Maddie around the farm. He secretly makes a hay pile at superspeed for her to leap on and then leaves her with Shelby. He uses her superhearing to listen as she whispers to the dog, confirming she can talk. Clark approaches her and says that he won't say mean things about her, and she agree to talk. They start to talk about horseback riding but Lois arrives and Maddie stops talking. Lois overhears the last part of the conversation and tries to invite herself along. Maddie, upset, concentrates and shatters the light bulbs, and then runs inside. Clark goes after her and tells her that he understands about how she has his powers, just as he does. She explains that she didn't kill her mother because she was in her room and her powers don't work through walls. Clark overrides Lois' suspicions about Maddie and asks her to watch the girl for a few hours while he investigates further.
Clark has Chloe check Maddie's background. The girl's birth mother died in a freak accident when the windshield of her car shattered and she crashed. Clark insists that Maddie isn't evil and he could be suspected of murder if he hadn't been adopted by the Kents and learned to control his powers.
Lois tries to get Maddie out for a picnic but the girl goes to find Shelby. Lois finds her and calms her down but Frank Colbert, an advocate from Child Services, arrives to collect Maddie. Lois tries to explain about Maddie's problems without revealing she has a super power, but doesn't have much success.
At the manor, Lex reviews video of Milton Fine revealing that he's been seen at several spots across the world near-simultaneously. Chloe arrives and warns Lex not to take advantage of Lana or he'll have to deal with her. Lex denies having any romantic interest in Lana, insisting that they're just friends and Chloe doesn't have any experience with boyfriends. An angry Chloe leaves and Lex smiles triumphantly.
At the farm, Colbert takes Maddie to his cars. However, when Lois goes to get Maddie's belongings, a man arrives and concentrates on the car. The windows explode, killing Colbert and injuring Lois. The man drives away with Maddie while Lois looks on.
Later, Clark goes to see Lois at the hospital. She describes the man and admits she's had second thoughts about Maddie, figuring she's just an innocent girl.
Maddie manages to get away from the man and starts to call Clark. The man arrives and stops her. He's her biological father, Tyler McKnight. He creates a crystal butterfly out of glass and Maddie realizes she got her power from him, and that he's the one who killed her mother and Naomi.
Chloe checks Lois' description and confirms that Maddie's abductor is her father. A robber, he was caught in a stained-glass window workshop on the day of the first meteor shower and gained his powers then. He was sent to Belle Reeve but released recently, but the seven diamonds he stole during his crime spree were never recovered. They find the address of Tyler's mother and go to see her. She was unaware that her son had married or had a daughter. She shows them a sketch of a stained-glass window that Tyler did and Clark realizes it's a window that is installed at the Talon, and that the seven diamonds are hidden inside of it.
Clark superspeeds to the Talon as Tyler removes the diamonds and offers them to Maddie. She refuses and Clark tries to rescue her. Tyler attacks him with glass but Clark, unaffected, throws him across the room into a case before sweeping Maddie up into his arms.
Lex tells Lana about his meeting with Chloe. She goes to the Daily Planet and tells Chloe to stop spreading rumors about her alleged romantic involvement with Lex.
Clark takes Lois back to her apartment and tells her that Maddie will be staying with her newly discovered grandmother. Martha arrives to tell Lois that with Naomi's death, she's chosen Lois as her new chief of staff. Lois agrees to work for her.
At the hospital, the deputy takes Tyler away but Tyler kills the man with his own glasses and escapes.
At the farm, Maddie is helping Clark with his chores and Martha comments that Jonathan would be proud of him. Maddie asks about Clark's father and he explains that his birth father was evil but he chooses to emulate his adopted father, Jonathan. Maddie is worried that her grandmother won't accept her and starts to lose control of her powers, but Clark calms her down.
Later that evening, Clark and Maddie come downstairs to play cards and discover that the glass in the window is broken. Clark has Maddie stay there and goes to the barn. Tyler is there, holding Martha hostage and threatening her with a piece of glass at her throat. Clark refuses and melts the shard with his heat vision. Tyler throws a cloud of glass shards at Clark but before he can do anything, the cloud stops moving. Maddie has come out and taken control of the glass. Her ability is more powerful than her father's and she insists she won't let him kill. She insists she won't let him hurt anyone again but Clark persuades her not to kill her father.
The next day, Maddie's grandmother comes to get her. Clark assures the girl that she can call him anytime she wants if she starts to lose control of her power. Maddie gives him a happier-looking picture and leaves with her newfound grandmother.
When Chloe learns that Lois is now working at the capital, she's happy that she now has an inside source. Clark brings up the situation with Lana and Chloe defensively tells him that she's not his spy. However, she tries to drop the matter when Clark senses that she might be hiding something.
Lois goes to see Lex at the manor. She wants to make sure they're both clear that there is nothing going on between them. Lex agrees, but then leans forward and kisses her. Lana hesitates for a moment and then kisses him back before leaving.
