October, 26, 1996: Excelsior Academy

Students Lex Luthor and Duncan Allenmeyer are talking about comics when Oliver Queen and his school pals Geoffrey and Alden come up to bully the two. Once they leave, Duncan vows revenge.

The Present

Lex and Lana go to the 10 year class reunion at Excelsior. Oliver has invited Lois there as his date. He talks with his old friends, and a drunken Alden notes that Duncan couldn’t make it. Oliver tells Alden to stop the drinking and be careful. Alden goes out front on his own. A piece of the Excelsior school statue breaks off of the roof and falls next to him. Everyone looks up as the sword falls from the statue and skewers Alden, killing him.

Later, Lex goes back home and Lionel arrives to comfort him. Lex isn’t particularly upset and isn’t impressed with Lionel’s efforts to be a concerned father.

The Past

Lex and Duncan talk about what they’ll do when their adults. Duncan plans to become a lawyer and help the poor. Lex agrees to help him just to annoy his father. They see Oliver, Alden, and Geoffrey coming out of the school office and realize they’ve stolen the answers for the upcoming test.

The Present

As Chloe has supper at the Kents with Clark, Clark wonders if other prisoners escaped from the Phantom Zone. He also tells Chloe that the Arctic Fortress was destroyed. Chloe suggests that if she can access Queen Industries’ satellite records during Black Tuesday, she can discover if there were any other craters like the one that Clark made when he returned from the Zone. Clark admits that Oliver owes him a favor.

Oliver, Geoffrey, and Lois leave the hospital. Lois, having heard Alden mention Duncan earlier, tries to find out more about him but Oliver and Geoffrey refuse to discuss their classmate. Geoffrey gets in his car, which explodes as he gets in.

Later, Clark meets Oliver at the penthouse. Clark asks for the satellite imagery and Oliver agrees, but asks him to see if Lex was responsible for the apparent accidents that killed his two friends.

The Past

Duncan tells Lex they should report Oliver, Geoffrey, and Alden to the principal, but Lex suggests they should blackmail their fellow students into treating them better. Before Lex can convince Duncan not to tell the principal, Oliver and his friends arrive and want to know if Lex has “handled” Duncan. Duncan realizes that Lex has been trying to manipulate him and attacks him. Lex fends him off, beating him badly in the process.

The Present

At the manor, Lex wakes up in bed with Lana. The room starts to shake and the chandelier plummets onto the bed. Lex and Lana roll out of the way but Lana is grazed and ends up at the hospital. Clark goes to the hospital and finds Lex blocking his way. The two argue over Lex’s responsibility and Lex tells Clark to leave, insisting he’s more dangerous to Lana. Lois arrives and says that she’s investigating the bizarre incidents, and wants to make sure that Oliver isn’t hurt or killed.

Clark goes to see Oliver to get answers. Oliver tells him that Duncan can’t be responsible… because he and Lex killed Duncan ten years ago.

The Past

Oliver breaks up the fight between Lex and Duncan. Duncan shoves Lex away and staggers off into the street… where he’s hit by a car.

The Present

Oliver finishes by explaining that Duncan suffered major cerebral trauma. Lionel hushed up the entire affair and bought the best doctors for Duncan, but he died two years later. Oliver blames himself, but suspects that Lionel knows more than he said at the time. Clark goes to see Lionel, who eventually admits that Duncan is still alive. He’s in a vegetative state and being kept at a private clinic.

At the clinic, a nurse gives Duncan an injection of a kryptonite-based serum.

Clark goes to the clinic and discovers that Lois has followed the trail there. They go to the room that Lionel described and Clark secretly breaks the lock so they can get in. They study the comatose Duncan’s EEG brain patterns and discover spikes at the times the attacks occurred.

Lex confronts Oliver at the penthouse and after an argument, tries to punch him. As they fight, one of the windows starts to vibrate on its own. As it shatters, shooting glass at the two, Oliver shoves Lex to safety, knocking him out in the process. The door to Oliver’s secret room opens and one of his arrows flies under Duncan’s mental control and pins him to the wall through his shoulder.

Clark and Oliver figure that Duncan is controlling objects using the electro-magnetic energy of his own brain, as a result of the kryptonite injections that Lionel started at the time of the first death. Realizing Oliver is the next target, Clark slips away from Lana, runs to the penthouse, and arrives just in time to stop Duncan from hitting Oliver with one of his electrical darts. The electrical charge backfires, short circuiting Duncan’s brain and killing him.

Clark returns to the clinic and claims he left to call Oliver and warn him. Lois decides not to write the story, and Clark suggests that sometimes you have to keep secrets to protect the people you love. Lois doesn’t believe it.

Later, Lex is at the manor with Lana and tells her everything that happened. Lex has invited Oliver over to thank him for saving his life at the penthouse. Oliver apologizes for how he treated Lex at private school, but Lex says that the bullying taught him that he doesn’t need friends like Oliver. Later, Lex goes to see Lionel and demands he tell him everything he knows about Duncan’s treatments.

At the barn, Clark is working when Oliver arrives to talk to him about making the wrong choices and living with the consequences. Chloe arrives and Clark introduces her to Oliver. After Oliver leaves, she shows Clark a satellite photo taken in Australia and Clark recognizes a figure in it as Raya.
