Clark is going over Dr. Swann's journals at the barn in the evening and has discovered another message from Kara in the transmissions. Chloe arrives and figures that Brainiac has traveled back in time to the day of Krypton's destruction and plans to destroy Clark as a baby. They figure that Jor-El can transport Clark back in time to save himself, but Clark refuses to do so: he thinks the world will be better off if he had never came to Earth. Chloe doesn't accept his argument and thrusts the Fortress key into his hand. A glow of white light envelops Clark and... he wakes up in the barn during the day. A boy comes in and demands to know who Clark is... and says that he's Clark Kent.
Clark goes into the house where he finds a picture of the new Clark posing with Jonathan and Martha. Jonathan is still alive, although the new Clark tells Clark that his parents are on a cruise. Clark manages to convince him to borrow a phone book and he tracks down Chloe in Smallville. She doesn't recognize him and he says they used to go to high school together and asks if she can help him track down Lana Lang. Chloe has to pass as she's busy preparing for her upcoming wedding, and introduces her fiancé to Clark.
Jimmy then goes to the
Daily Planet where he meets Jimmy. He flatters the photographer and gets him to help locate Lana using the newspaper database: she's living in Paris and has a wife and two children. Clark is happy but Lois, still a reporter, overhears him and thinks he might be upset, offering him a shoulder to cry on. Before Clark can respond, Kara arrives as the head of a government team and arrest Lois, saying she's taken top-secret information. After she's gone, Jimmy identifies her as Linda Danvers, head of the Department of Domestic Security. Jimmy reveals that the President of the U.S. is... Lex Luthor, who appointed Kara to the position. Lex managed to win the election by rounding up meteor freaks, which still happened in the world without Clark. Clark forces Jimmy to reveal that he was going to deliver a message for Lois to Ace of Clubs nightspot.
Clark goes to the club and spots Sheriff Adams. She doesn't recognize him, naturally, but when he confronts her she admits she quit her job as sheriff of Smallville and now works for the government. Clark concludes that she's Lois' informant and gets her to say where Kara is taking Lois. Clark rescues Lana at super speed where she figures he's a meteor freak.
They go to Jimmy's apartment where she reveals the classified information she was stole was a document explaining that Lex is planning a nuclear strike on the enemy, but he is basing his decision on a fake report signed by Lex's Chief of Staff: Milton Fine. Clark figures that Fine, Brainiac, is still planning to destroy Earth and has tricked Lex into starting a nuclear apocalypse. Lex is holding a press conference in Smallville and will have the nuclear codes that will let him start the war. Clark resolves to go there and stop him, and Lois provides him with a suit, glasses, and a press pass.
Clark goes to the press conference and hears Lex talking to Kara about the fact she seems to be turning against him despite the fact that Lionel found her spaceship and raised her as his own daughter. Kara tries to convince Lex that Brainiac is using him to start a nuclear war but Lex insists that she trust him and burns the evidence. Kara reluctantly agrees to support him and Brainiac comes to get Lex to his press conference.
Clark confronts Kara and says that he's her cousin. She attacks him, saying that she was sent to Earth to kill him. He manages to hold her off long enough to convince her that he's on her side and he comes from an alternate timeline, and knows that Fine is actually Brainiac. Kara takes Clark to Lex and tries to convince the President that he's being played, but Lex reveals that it's his plan to destroy the Earth, and use the survivors to rebuild a new society with himself as their leader. He shoots Clark twice with kryptonite bullets, then wounds Kara as well. Brainiac has her put in kryptonite handcuffs and taken away for safekeeping, then gives the nuclear launch codes to Lex as Clark looks on in horror. Lex launches the nuclear attack and missiles fly across the globe. Lex goes to the bunker as Brainiac reveals that he plans to use Kara to free General Zod from the Phantom Zone, then use her and Lex to breed a new race of Kryptonians
Brainiac prepares to kill Clark using Lex's gun... and his voice becomes that of Jor-El. The world spins and Clark finds himself suspended in a vortex. Clark realizes that the whole thing was an illusion brought on by the key. Jor-El explains that now that he has shown Clark what his destiny is, and what happens if he fails, Kal-El must stop Brainiac once and for all. Clark agrees and finds himself back in the barn with Chloe. He quickly agrees to travel back in time.
In 1989, Brainiac prepares to destroy baby Kal-El and smashes aside Kara when she tries to stop him. Clark arrives but lacks his powers under Krypton's red sun. Kara stabs Brainiac through the chest with a control crystal and tells Clark to launch the spaceship and get the baby to safety. As Clark puts himself in the spacecraft, Kara seemingly kills Brainiac and comes to watch as the ship lifts off into space. They go back through the portal seconds before Krypton is destroyed.
Back on Earth, Clark discovers that Lana's condition is getting worse despite Brainiac's defeat. Kara thinks they should go back in time again and try to put things right, but Clark warns that they have no way of anticipating what might happen, and they could keep trying to change things forever. He resolves to find a cure for Lana and Kara promises to be there for him no matter what. Clark goes up to barn to find Lex waiting for him. Lex asks if Clark knows anything about Lana's condition that would help his doctors to find a cure, but Clark refuses to say anything.
Clark goes to the
Planet to do research on coma conditions in an attempt to find a cure for Lana. Lois notices him and, realizing what he's doing, offers him a shoulder to cry on and invites him out for a drink.
At the farm that night, Kara is getting some milk from the refrigerator when she's hit with a sudden pain. She collapses to the floor in agony and then looks up... different.
