Quest - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Lex has summoned Milash, an antiquities expert to examine the cryptograph he fond in the safety deposit box in Zurich. Milash is intrigued but says he needs to take it to his shop in Metropolis to do a more thorough investigation. Lex reluctantly agrees, sending two of his people with Milash. Once they're gone, the mysterious attacker from Zurich attacks Lex and manages to knock him out. He then rips open Lex's shirt and slashes his chest. He's interrupted when the security guards arrive, forcing him to flee. They get Lex to the Smallville Medical Center, where he recognizes the symbols and figures the attacker is trying to find the cryptograph.

Chloe is waiting for Jimmy when he returns to her apartment, but he's more interested in the fact he got a photo of Lex being admitted to the hospital. When he shows her the picture of Lex's chest, she recognizes the symbols and calls to meet Clark at the medical center. Clark identifies the two overlapping symbols as the Kryptonian words for "Savior" and "Traveler." Clark goes to see Lex in his hospital room for answers, but Lex has already left.

In Metropolis, the attacker is watching Milash's shop and reports to his superior over the phone that he knows where the cryptograph is. He then goes into the shop and kills Lex's two agents, but Lex arrives and shoots the attacker dead before he can kill Milash and get the cryptograph.

At Isis, Clark and Chloe go over the hospital footage and Clark realizes that the two symbols overlap to form a third symbol: "Sanctuary." Since the Kryptonian language has no word for "Church," they conclude the symbol is meant to lead Clark to a church, and Savior + Traveler = St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. Chloe locates St. Christopher's Cathedral in Montreal and downloads the coordinates into a handheld for Clark.

Lex force Milash to explain that a German watchmaker, Bauer, made the cryptograph and worked for European nobility. A mysterious employer hired Bauer to make a clock but the plans disappeared during World War II. Dr. Swann later found and donated them to St. Christopher's in Montreal.

Clark arrives at the cathedral in Montreal and finds a basin with Kryptonian symbols saying to look beneath the basis. Usiong his super strength, Clark lifts the basin to reveal more symbols. A figure in monk's robes and holding a cane approaches and identifies himself as Edward Teague, father of Jason and husband of Genevieve. As the last surviving member of Veritas, he is dedicated to serving the Traveler and went into hiding when his family were killed. He explains that he ad his employee carve the symbols in Lex's chest to provide a clue to Clark to get him to the Cathedral. Swann hid a clue to the control device's location in the cathedral and Lex is close to finding it. Hoover, he realizes that Clark is reluctant to embrace his destiny and has refused to kill Lex. He takes the cap off of his lead staff to reveal a piece of kryptonite which he uses to render Clark unconscious.

Lex and Milash fly to Montreal and the antiquities expert demands to know what is going on, worrying that Lex may kill him to protect his secrets. Lex explains his father was part of a secret society, which arose from the European nobility. They commissioned Bauer to make the clock, which will give Lex the information he needs to learn Veritas' secret.

Jimmy comes to visit Chloe at Isis and says he's been doing research on the Kawatche cave drawings. Chloe tries to misdirect him but he shows her one symbol that represent a human sacrifice.

Teague straps Clark to an altar with grooves cut in it, and pours liquid kryptonite into the grooves to keep Clark immobile. He then prepares an ancient Kryptonian sacrificial ritual, from before they embraced science, and notes that even Jor-el feared that Clark might become a destroyer. To protect against that possibility, Jor-El sent a control device to Earth and Swann found it and hid it. Teague then cuts a Kryptonian symbol into Clark's chest as the first part of the ritual.

He's unaware that Lex has arrived at the cathedral and gone upstairs to find Bauer's clock. Lex places the cryptograph in the clock, triggering off a hidden mechanism that plays a Scottish ballad, "Birks of St. Kilda." A panel on the top opens revealing a small five-sided Kryptonian key.

Teague finds Lex and admits he's impressed that "little Alexander" has become as powerful as he has, and has risen to become the Destroyer, the destined opponent of the Traveler. He attacks Lex and the two fight. Below, Chloe arrives compliments of Oliver Queen's private jet and finds Clark. She drains off the kryptonite liquid and the recovered Clark frees himself and goes upstairs. Lex has gotten the upper hand but Clark moves at invisible superspeed and knocks him aside, saving Teague and destroying the clock.

Lex lets Milash live and sends him back to Milan, then starts to fly toward Scotland and the island of St. Kilda. However, going over the intelligence reports delivered by his operative, he realizes that St. Kilda once was home to a castle: the same castle that Lionel Luthor had imported to Smallville stone by stone. Lex orders the plane to change route and head back to Smallville.

Jimmy meets with Chloe at her apartment brining champagne. He's celebrating because he's sold his first story... to Lex Luthor. Jimmy has been researching the Kawatche caves and determine that the symbols representing Naman and Sageeth, good and evil respectively, indicate that the two eventually merge into one, and that their struggle will end in one final battle. The next day, Chloe passes on the information to Clark. Clark is worried that his abilities could be used to destroy the world if they fall into the wrong hands. Chloe warns that Lex is closer then ever to finding the means of controlling Clark, and that Clark may have no choice but to kill his one-time friend.

Lex has his people searching the manor and examining each stone. Examining the Kryptonian key he got from the clock, he realizes that the symbol on it matches a pattern on the manor's fireplace. Smashing open the mantle, he finds a crystalline sphere with a slot that matches the key. He places the symbol in the key and watches in awe as the sphere floats into the air on its own, and then projects a map of Earth... with a location highlighted in the Arctic.
