Four weeks after the confrontation between Clark and Lex at the Fortress, a LuthorCorp team is set up near the debris. A woman arrives to confront the team leader: Tess Mercer, the acting CEO of LuthorCorp. She orders a search for any sign that Lex escaped. They pick up a sonar trace indicating human remains. Outside, Green Arrow takes out the base’s main electrical platform. Black Canary arrives and disables the security while Green Arrows spots the sonar trace and gets its location. The team leader, Regan, draws a gun on him but Arthur Curry bursts through the ice and takes him out. However, checking on the location, the only thing they find is Clark’s jacket.
In Smallville, Lois has infiltrated Lex’s manor disguised as a French maid. She breaks into a safe and steals a flash drive concerning “Black Creek Detainees.” Tess comes in and complains about Lois’ work but quickly recognizes her for who she is. Lois says she’s there to find Chloe by going through Lex’s phone records, since the government denies having arrested her. Tess insists that Chloe must be guilty and has security escort Lois out.
In Black Creek, Montana, Chloe is undergoing tests which demonstrate she has an ability to store and process information at a faster rate than a high-speed computer. She has no explanation for her abilities and objects to the government holding her against her will. The government researcher warns her she can stay and help them, or go to court and be tried for treason.
Oliver Queen and his team try to track down Clark by going through databases. He refuses to give up on Clark despite the fact things look grim.
In Verkhoyansk, Russia, Clark is unloading trucks at a Russian work camp. He asks the camp leader for a phone call but the man refuses until Clark pays him back. Clark steals a truck and tries to drive out through the gate but a guard opens fire and the truck goes out of control. The guards ruthlessly beat him and the bleeding Clark passes out.
Tess visits Regan who says they picked up a coded communication signal from the group that attacked them. She wonders if he’s covering his tracks and he objects to her questioning his loyalty. She refuses to back down and tell him to find Lex or he’ll be terminated.
Chloe is forced to decode a coded communication signal and find three cellphone numbers. She finds the three numbers and the government acquires three targets.
In Tromso, Norway and Qeqertarsquac, Greenland, agents use tranquilizer darts to take out Arthur and Black Canary. However, Chloe realize the people holding her aren’t with the government and refuses to give up the last telephone number. She makes a break for it but is quickly recaptured, and Regan tells his people to find the third target.
Clark is put back to work but attacks two of his captors. He’s recaptured but Oliver arrives, pretending to be a caviar purchaser. When Clark recognizes him, Oliver challenges him and the two stage a fight. They have a whispered conversation and Oliver tells Clark to play along. Oliver then asks for the caviar with Clark thrown into the agreement. Clark’s captors agree and they head back to Smallville by jet. Clark admits that he lost his powers as a result of Jor-El’s control device. Oliver doesn’t think Lex survived but Clark notes that he did, but he didn’t see what happened to his nemesis. He wandered across the Arctic until a fishing boat picked him up. Clark thinks he’s screwed up, particularly concerning Chloe, and Oliver informs him that the DDS doesn’t have Chloe. He does know that Chloe is probably at Lex’s facility at Black Creek. With Clark useless and Arthur and Dinah gone, Oliver orders a course change to Montana.
Arthur and Dinah are both imprisoned at the Black Creek facility, their powers suppressed. Regan boasts that he has a new secret weapon and wants to know who they were looking for. They refuse to talk and Regan figures that their leader does know.
Elsewhere in the base, Green Arrow and Clark break into the base and Clark insists on helping in the search. Green Arrow reluctantly agrees but warns that he’s on his own. Clark checks the cells and finds… Lois and two security guards. Lois, undercover as a guard, tries to pass Clark off as a prisoner but is forced to knock out the other guards when they don’t fall for her ruse.
Regan arrives to talk to Chloe, who says she’s not going to help them. He knows about her mother and reveals Lex drew spinal fluid from Moira and they’ve developed a serum that can force people to do what they want. He injects Chloe with it and tells her to find the last telephone number. They track the target’s location… inside the base.
Green Arrow finds Arthur and Dinah, but Regan injects him with the serum and tells him to do whatever it takes to find Lex. Meanwhile, Lois and Clark make their way through the base and find Chloe. The government technician tasers Lois and Clark knocks him out. Chloe brings him up to speed on what happened and he goes to find Green Arrow. Green Arrow demands to know where Lex is, and when Clark can’t answer, Green Arrow shoots him in the chest. Clark pulls out the arrow but is unable to answer. Green Arrow opens fire again and the arrow goes straight through Clark’s chest. He collapses to the ground, dying, and the serum wears off on Green Arrow. Chloe arrives and uses her power to heal him over Clark’s objections that it’s too dangerous to her. Nothing happens and Clark’s life flashes before his eyes. The last thing he sees is… John. The Martian has arrived and flies Clark up into space.
Later, Clark recovers consciousness at the barn, completely healed and with his powers back. John is there and says he took Clark to the sun so he could regain his powers. He refused to let Clark die despite his promise to Jor-El. He notices that the Sun stripped him of his powers, but that Clark’s is the greater destiny. Now Clark will have to find his guidance without Jor-El’s guidance. Clark decides to finally say goodbye and give up the farm to find a new life.
At Lex’s manor, Tess arrives while reading a newspaper article about Regan’s disappearance. She notices the Veritas crest on the stained glass window and then sits herself down at Lex’s desk for the first time. Her aide comes in and Tess insists the only thing that matters is finding Lex. The aide informs her that the Black Creek facility has been eliminated and the prisoners reassimilated. She also has a case containing a blue crystal that she gives to Tess.
At her apartment, Chloe is going through computer files at lightning speed and wonders what’s happening to her. She hears a noise downstairs and goes down to find Jimmy looking for her. He apologies and then admits he jumped the gun in proposing to her. Jimmy doesn’t want things to change between them. However, she says yes, she’s accepting his proposal.
In Metropolis, Oliver, Arthur, and Dinah meet with Clark, who thanks them for helping him. They’ve determined there’s no sign of any human remains in the Arctic, but are going to have to split up and go underground since Tess knows their identities.
At the
Daily Planet, Lois finds Clark there waiting to thank her. He tells her he’ll see her Monday morning: he’s accepting a job at the newspaper as a reporter. Lois is less than thrilled.
