At Chloe and Jimmy’s engagement party, a drunken Lois complains to Clark that she can’t figure out what Chloe sees in Jimmy. Clark wonders if she’s jealous and thinks she should be happy for her cousin. In response, Lois gets up on a bar stool and as the maid of honor proposes a toast to Chloe and Jimmy, saying that as girls they promised to wait until they found their soulmates… and Chloe should keep on looking. Clark gets her down and then finishes the toast by saying that Jimmy is Chloe’s soulmate.
After the party breaks up, Jimmy and Chloe walk home when suddenly a man turns on his car’s high beams right in their faces. He shoots them both with tranquilizer darts.
The next morning, Lois wakes up in the Kent farm’s living room, wearing nothing but Clark’s football jersey. She can’t remember what happened because of her drinking and wonders if anything happened between them. After a bit of teasing, he assures her that she undressed herself. She prepares to leave to meet Chloe for dress fittings and eventually gets around to thanking Clark for driving her home.
Tess is at the
Daily Planet working with her assistant trying to figure out who the mysterious X is that stole the Kryptonian crystal. Her assistant thinks it might be Lex but Tess isn’t as sure. Oliver is waiting in her office and sarcastically notes she bought the Star City Towers out from under him. He notes that she seems obsessed with finding Lex and she asserts that Lex has done more for the world than Oliver ever did. He wonders if Lex was more than just a mentor to her. Tess doesn’t deny it and Oliver quickly apologizes, and invites her to dinner. She wonders what he has in mind but he assures her it’s just a meal, not a date, and she agrees.
Lois and Clark arrive at Chloe’s apartment and find the bed covered in petals and a pair of pink fur-covered handcuffs. However, Jimmy and Chloe aren’t there. Noting the piled up mail, they realize that the couple didn’t come the previous evening.
Jimmy and Chloe wake up in an underground chamber and their abductor says that he’s going to determine if they’re truly meant to get married. He turns on the lights and they see two corpses, strapped into chairs and wired up with electricity.
Clark and Lois go to the
Daily Planet and do some research to determine that other couples have been similarly abducted. A guilty Lois believes she could have kept her cousin from being abducted if she hadn’t gotten so drunk. They cross-reference the kidnapped couples and determine they all visited the same three wedding shops. Clark suggests that they split up but Lois insists on going with him to the first store, a stationery shop.
The abductor, who is wearing a mask, places Jimmy and Chloe in the chairs and then hooks them up to electrical wiring and lie detectors. He insists that it’s his “duty” to determine if they truly love each other, to test the sacred bond, and warns that not everyone loves each other enough to get married. He starts by asking Jimmy if he’s every cheated on Chloe. When Jimmy lies and says he hasn’t, the abductor detects it and shocks Chloe. Jimmy admits that he kissed Maxima (in the previous episode), but Chloe says that she understands that the alien queen was controlling him.
Clark and Lois check out the stationery shop as reporters and have no luck. Lois suggests that since the abductor goes after couples, they'll need to pass themselves off as a couple. Clark is less than thrilled with the idea but goes along with it. They next arrive at the jewelry store and the owner talks about the bond of marriage as they shop for an engagement ring. Oliver is out shopping for Tess and comes in. Seeing them together, he wonders what's going on and Clark and Lois lie, claiming they're romantically involved. They quickly get out of there and go to the third shop, a bakery. However, Clark suggests they split up to check it out and do some more research. Lois doesn't agree, but when she turns away for a moment, Clark superspeeds away.
The abductor prepares to test Chloe and Jimmy while noting that he wishes someone had done the same thing for him and his ex-wife, who he claims betrayed him. He switched his attention to Chloe, asking her if she ever cheated on Jimmy. She says no and the abductor confirms she's telling the truth. However, he then asks her if she's now in love with anyone else. Jimmy tells her not to give their abductor the satisfaction so the man shocks Jimmy and repeats the question. She says she doesn't love anyone but Jimmy... and the abductor confirms she's telling the truth. He offers his congratulations and then drugs both of them unconscious again.
Oliver arrives at Lex's manor and Tess comes after him with a quarterstaff. She tosses him one first and they spar physically, while she points out that he never took his parents' death seriously, and never took her seriously. She notes that he had an affair with another woman while they were dating, and asks him what he's so afraid of. Tess backs him against the wall... and he admits he was afraid of her. They kiss.
That night, Lois is walking home and trying to get hold of Clark. She leaves a message on his voice mail and is then blinded by the abductor's headlights. He drugs her and puts her into his car, then removes his mask: he's the jewelry store owner.
Chloe and Jimmy wake up back in bed at their apartment. Chloe sees the fur handcuffs and the rose petals and wonders what sick game their abductor is up to now, and Jimmy sheepishly admits they were his idea. She assures him that it's thanks to him that she survived and they have no secrets. They call the police department, who start going over the apartment. Clark arrives and says that he can't find Lois, and that she mentioned high beams on her voice mail message to him. Chloe says they were abducted the same way and mentions their abductor talking about the bond between them. Clark, realizing the jewelry store owner said the same thing, quickly leaves and superspeeds to the jewelry store. Using his super hearing, he hears Lois and enters the downstairs area where she's strapped into a chair. He starts to free her but then gets dizzy: the jewelry store owner has arrived and is wearing a kryptonite watchband. He easily knocks out the weakened Clark. He then straps Clark into the other chair and prepares to test them. He asks Lois if she ever cheated on her fiancé and she says no, but he detects her lying and electrifies the still-weakened Clark. Lois says she and Clark aren't really engaged but the jewelry store owner figures she's lying and asks Lois if she loves Clark. Clark insists that she tell the truth and Lois says yes. The lie detector shows that she's telling the truth. The abductor approaches Clark and asks him the same question, but Clark manages to grab him, pull off the watchband, and throw it down a secret grate. Clark then breaks free, uses his heat vision to burst open some steam pipes, and knocks the abductor out once Lois can't see him.
The next morning, Lois goes to the Isis Foundation and watches the video recording of her toast, which she doesn't remember because of her drinking. Chloe comes in and Lois apologizes to her, explaining that she's been through so many bad relationships that she was suspicious of Chloe's engagement. Chloe says she's sure that Jimmy is the man for her and she can feel it in her heart. Lois admits she's jealous and, when Jimmy arrives, gives him a hug and welcomes him into the family.
Lois leaves and Jimmy says that he does have a secret he's hiding from Chloe: his alcoholic father works in a garage and he doesn't know his mother. He explains that he lied to her because he was ashamed and that he had created a life for himself to fit in. She says that it doesn’t matter and they embrace.
Oliver wakes up in Tess' bed and finds her dressing for work. He suggests they go to Malibu for a romantic weekend and gives her the diamond bracelet he bought at the jewelry store. She turns it down, saying that their night of sex was nothing but physical relief. She tells him to leave and he wonders what happened to her. Tess says that she simply grew up, but he left just when things started to get interesting.
At the
Daily Planet, Lois tries to avoid Clark without success. They end up together in the elevator and Clark gives her a way out by congratulating her on being such a good liar that she could beat the lie detector. Lois hastily agrees that she was lying and explains that she slipped the sensor off when the abductor wasn't looking. She gets off the elevator and says that it's a good thing Clark wasn't asked the same question, because he's such a lousy liar.
