Bulletproof - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In his new job as a detective, John Jones, the now-powerless Martian, is chasing a murder suspect. He manages to drive the suspect off the road and capture him. The regular police, including Joe Simmons and Talbert, take the suspect. Alone, John prepares to leave when a sniper wearing a Metropolis police badge opens fire on him with armor-piercing rounds. John tries to take cover but a round goes through the car door and hits him in the chest.

Clark is at Metropolis General Hospital looking for clues to Chloe's abductor when Lana arrives with coffee. Clark tells her that a watchman and two ambulance drivers were discovered dead the night that Chloe was abducted from her wedding. Lana assures him he'll get to the bottom of it and leaves, and Clark spots John being brought in, in critical condition. Clark watches as they work on his friend, and Oliver arrives. Clark's worried they'll discover John is a Martian but Oliver assures him the attending physician, Dr. Emil, is on his payroll for "special" cases. Clark feels guilty since John lost his invulnerability to heal him, but Oliver tells him they need to start finding the sniper and they're best off working separately.

Tess is training in martial arts at Lex's manor when Lana comes in to thank her for keeping her name out of the papers. Tess tells her that Lex spoke highly of her, and Lana asks if Lex knows she's siphoning off LuthorCorp funds for a "Prometheus" project. She figures that Tess is doing it with Lex's approval so she knows where Lex is. Tess denies it and Lana warns that Lex often turns against the people who are loyal to him. She leaves, with a wifi unit active in her purse.

Clark arrives at the Isis Foundation and catches Chloe as she prepares to fly back to Star City to be with her injured husband. She checks John's files, complaining about having to do it the "old-fashioned" way now that Brainiac is gone from her. As she works, she tells Clark that she's concerned about him and Lana, and how it will affect Lois. Clark clearly still has feelings for Lana, and Chloe warns him not to hurt her cousin. She accesses the police records and discovers that the armor-piercing round John was shot with has disappeared from the police evidence room, meaning policemen are involved. They conclude no one will believe them so Clark will have to go undercover, and Chloe prepares to set up a fake ID for him.

The next day, Clark meets with his new partner, Danny Turpin. He claims he's a transfer from Coast City named "Joe Foreman." On patrol Danny talks about his son. Clark brings up John's shooting but Danny dismisses it as typical for Metropolis. He's more concerned about the vigilantes like Green Arrow and the "red-blue blur," who don't have to follow the rules. Clark notices Danny has a photo of a crook from a line-up and Danny tells him it's someone he's looking for. They get a code for a break-in at a pharmacy and arrive to see a junkie running away. Danny goes after him into an alleyway, but the junkie gets behind him and prepares to shoot. Clark arrives and catches the bullet, then knocks the junkie out before Danny can turn around. Danny grudgingly thanks him for saving his life.

At Isis, Lana examines the data she stole from Tess' computer and sends it to her mysterious ally. There are blueprints of some kind of power suit.

Danny hosts a barbeque for his fellow officers and Clark comes over. He meets Danny's wife Cindy and his son, who pretends to be the "red-blue blur." When they have a moment alone, Cindy thanks Clark for looking after her husband, and talks about how his previous partner Mike was killed by a criminal. Simmons and the other cops congratulate Clark on saving Danny. When he tries to bring up John's shooting, Simmons notes that they have to look out for each other but John was always a lone wolf and kept to himself. Before Clark can pursue the matter, they all get a page.

Tess comes to the Isis Foundation to confront Lana, having discovered the missing information. She holds Lana at a gunpoint and demands the information, saying the theft corrupted the files and the data is Lex's only change for survival. Lana gets close enough to disarm her and the two of them fight hand-to-hand until Lana grabs the gun.

Clark, Danny, Simmons and the other policemen arrive at a warehouse by the docks. Another policeman has captured the criminal that shoot Danny's partner. Danny beats the man and Simmons encourages him to kill the criminal. Talbert tells Clark to prove himself and beat the crook with a tire iron. Green Arrow arrives and stuns the cops with taser arrows. He shoots Clark before he realizes who he is, and Clark easily catches the arrow. Green Arrow wants to know what he's doing there and Clark says he'll explain later but he has to leave. Danny, barely conscious, sees the two of them talking.

Lana goes over Tess' background, how she was conducting a LuthorCorp expedition in South America and was almost killed in an explosion. Lex saved her life, but plants a nano-transmitter in Tess' eye. Lana brings up the transmission on the monitor screens and explains that Lex has secretly been watching everything she did without her knowledge.

As Clark checks on John, Danny arrives and wants to know what’s Clark's connection to John and Green Arrow. Clark figures that Danny and the other cops have formed their own vigilante squad. John discovered it so one of tried to silence him for good. Danny insists he's protecting his fellow officers but Clark points out that they shot one of their own. He tells Danny to remember why he became a cop.

At the farm, Oliver visits Clark and demands to know what's going on. Clark notes that Oliver wanted to kill and should be able to understand why Danny might want revenge, and that he wants to do more then just knock the bad guy's unconscious. He wants to bring them back to the side of good. Oliver doesn’t believe it and notes that the suspect John arrested was killed and dumped in the river. Clark is going over police files and figures the killer was either Simmons or Talbert, as they both have sniper training. Oliver warns that he'll do whatever it takes to stop them, including Danny.

At the station, Danny tells Simmons that Clark isn't who he says he is.

Clark goes to Simmons' house and finds the sniper rifle in his car. However, Simmons, Danny, and the others arrive to arrest him for trying to murder John. Clark tries to get through to Danny as he's led away. Once he's gone, Simmons tells Danny that he needs to prove himself by killing Green Arrow. He has Danny and Talbert take the junkie to a warehouse and start beating him, while he sets up across the street on a rooftop with a sniper rifle. Green Arrow hears the noise and investigates, knocking out Talbert. As the junkie runs off, Danny pulls his gun and orders Green Arrow to surrender. Simmons urges him to shoot the vigilante but Danny hesitates, and Green Arrow tells him it's not too late. Danny says his family is at risk if he doesn’t and Green Arrow says that Clark trusted him, and he does too. He tells Danny to do what he has to and Danny lowers his gun. Simmons draws a bead on Danny and Green Arrow yanks him behind cover.

Simmons calls for backup, saying that Danny has been injured. Clark, being ushered out of the patrol car, hears and superspeeds away when the arresting officers aren't looking. Simmons manages to hit Danny in the shoulder with one shot and prepares to finish him and Green Arrow both off. Clark arrives and blocks his shot, then disarms him. Simmons draws a pistol and shoots him, but the bullet bounces off Clark's chest and hits Simmons in the arm. Clark claims he has a bulletproof vest. Below, Danny arrests and the police arrive.

Later, Clark and Oliver visit John as he's leaving the hospital. Cark thanks him for covering for him with the police. John explains that he didn't ask for their help because he was used to handling things by himself when he had his powers. Oliver admits that the work better as a team than apart.

At the manor, Tess removes the transmitter, holds it up to a mirror, and tells the monitoring Lex that she trusted him until he betrayed her. Now she's going to eliminate his bank accounts and make his life vanish. She seals the transmitter in a locket to cut off the signal. Oliver arrives at her invitation. She tells him that she wants to have dinner while they discuss a merger. They go: on the desk is a Daily Planet with a headline announcing Lex has officially been declared dead.

Clark visits Danny at home with his family. He apologizes for not telling Danny he was an undercover reporter, and Danny thanks him for turning him around. Now his family can be proud of him. Clark wonders how Danny puts himself at risk knowing how it could affect his family, and Danny says he does it to protect them. He wonders who Clark has that he values enough to protect.

Clark goes to the Talon and finds Lana making coffee. She says that she did what she came to do but it's harder then she thought to leave. Clark says he's glad she's staying and that he's tired of sacrificing everything for the sake of the world. Lana insists that the world needs him and she would be in the way, but they end up kissing.
