Episode Recap

Dr. Edward Grohl and his technicians are apparently working for Lex Luthor, preparing a nanite transdermal graft procedure on a human subject despite the risks. They begin the procedure and the tank containing the subject bursts into flame. The flames die down revealing... Lana Lang.

Chloe visits Clark at the farm and finds him watching the DVD Lana sent him when she broke up with him. Clark confesses that he kissed Lana but Chloe isn't particularly concerned. Clark notes that he's moved to accept his destiny since Lana left, and wonders if her return could harm that. Chloe tells him to talk to Lana, who she thinks is at the Talon. Clark arrives there to find Chloe's apartment wrecked. Tess Mercer comes in, armed, but explains that she had nothing to do with the damage. She says she came to warn Lana that she was getting too close to Lex's Prometheus Project. Tess admits that she has no connection to the nanite technology, and owes Lana a favor for showing her that Lex used her. Tess explains that Lana was able to make the goodbye DVD so soon after she came out of her coma because Tess and her men forced her to do so at gunpoint. Tess say that Lex told her it was for Lana's own good, and that Lana was in the asylum because Clark had emotionally damaged her.

2008

After recording the DVD, two of Tess' men transfer Lana via a van. She manages to get the drop on them, kicks them out, and escapes in the vehicle. She pulls over at a gas station, goes into the restroom, and cuts her hair short.

Now

Tess explains that the men are now dead and Lex has hired new employees with no connection to his old life. Using his x-ray vision, Clark finds a phoenix medallion and Tess recognizes it as belonging to her strategic advisor, Carter Bowfry. Clark goes to the manor and talks to Carter, who says that the medallion isn't his because he has one of his own. When Clark pursues the matter, Carter explains that he gave Lana the medallion after she came to him in Edge City.

2008

Lana finds Carter and asks him to train her, insisting she wants to become invincible. He initially refuses but she convinces him and puts her through a series of torturous endurance tests to increase her pain threshold. When she's unable to do so, he asks whom it is she's still holding onto. She admits that she's still thinking of Clark and Carter tells her to complete the training for herself and let go of her own life. She successfully pasts the tests but says she needs power, power like she once had but wasn't ready for. Carter warns her not to look back at her past, then gives her a phoenix medallion to remember to look upward, not down.

Now

Carter explains that Lana returned to Metropolis and he followed her there. When she ignored his warnings, he decided to seek redemption for his own past and signed on as a defense contract advisor with Tess. Carter fed inside information to Lana, who he reveals contacted Chloe.

Grohl begins grafting nanites onto Lana, their pattern spreading across her body.

Tess meets with Lex's henchman Regan, who admits he broke into Chloe's apartment and he's still working for Lex. He notes that Tess is no longer supporting their boss. Tess tells him to hand over the Prometheus technology or she'll take it by force.

Grohl finishes the grafting procedure and places Lana in a quarantine chamber.

Clark goes to Chloe and asks why she didn't tell him about Lana. She says she gave her word and thought Lana could take care of herself. Clark points out that Lana has been kidnapped and warns that she doesn’t have the powers he does.

2008

Lana visits Chloe at the Isis Foundation and congratulates her on her upcoming wedding, and the improvements she's made to the Foundation. She admits that she's proud of what Clark has become. Lana tries to obtain information on Project Ares, Lex's program to make super-soldiers using alien DNA, but Chloe warns that it's dangerous. Lana insists on forging ahead and say she'll contact Clark when she's ready, and has Chloe promise not to tell him.

Now

Chloe explains that Lex mothballed Project Ares even before Lana emerged from her coma. They wonder why Lana didn't contact Clark once she escaped Tess' men, and conclude that she's seeking revenge on Lex.

At the Daily Planet, Tess finds her personal security guard dead in her office. Regan emerges from the shadows, explaining he tortured the man for info on Prometheus and then killed him. Tess points out the security cameras will have recorded their conversation. Regan, amused, notes that he saw plenty of personal footage of her via the camera Lex had planted in her brain. Tess disarms and attacks him, knocking him unconscious. She then ruthlessly kicks him to death as a nanite pattern appears on her face.

Clark and Chloe go to the Isis Foundation and find a secret safe where Lana hid a hard drive. Chloe downloads the information and finds a recording of Lana talking with Dr. Grohl.

2008

Lana compliments Grohl on creating Prometheus and asks him if he wants Lex abusing its power to become a deity. She asks for the skin graft to attach the Prometheus suit so she can obtain superpowers. Grohl agrees but worries that his people will ask why he's experimenting on her. Lana tells him to pretend that Lex ordered her to undergo the procedure.

Now

Clark and Chloe realizes that Lana plans to use Grohl's technology to gain superpowers.

Using the information on the security camera in her office, Tess finds Grohl's lab. She tells Grohl to give her the suit and sees Lana. Grohl warns that opening the quarantine chamber prematurely could kill Lana. Tess aims her gun at Lana and Grohl grabs her arm. They struggle for the gun and one shot goes into a control panel. Tess knocks Grohl to the ground and prepares to shoot him. Clark superspeeds in but before he can do anything, Lana bursts out of the chamber, catches the bullet meant for Grohl, knocks out Tess, and runs away at superspeed.

Later, Tess arrives at the manor to find that Lana has ripped open her safe and is burning all the Prometheus data. Lana tells Tess that she's her friend and warns that as long as Tess is angry at Lex, he'll always control her. She tells Tess to stop being a victim and leaves.

Clark is working at the Daily Planet when he hears Lana calling to him on the roof. He goes up there and she explains that he doesn't need to worry: she can handle the powers that overwhelmed her the last time. Now she can protect herself and they can be together without preventing his true destiny. Clark worries that things can't work out but Lana assures him they can and kisses him.
