A man surrounded by toys is working on models of the buildings of Metropolis while talking to a large doll seated on a table next to him.
The LuthorCorp Board of Directors has assembled and are discussing the removal of Tess Mercer after her misallocation of company funds. Oliver Queen comes in and tells them that Tess is overseas and he called the meeting. He informs them that with Tess' help he no owns a controlling share of LuthorCorp. They accuse Tess of selling the company out but Oliver notices a Newton's Cradle executive toy on an end table that is clicking away and then stops. He tells everyone to get down and ducks beneath the boardroom table just as the toy explodes.
Clark and Lana are in Clark's bed and shatter it with their combined powers. Lana asks if she can go on patrol with Clark but Clark is reluctant to endanger. He gives in, but as they're preparing to leave Chloe arrives with word that the LuthorCorp directors were killed in an explosion and Oliver is in the hospital.
Clark and Lana visits Oliver in the hospital. They figure that since Oliver has taken control of LuthorCorp, Lex is seeking revenge against Oliver. However, Oliver points out that if that were the case, Lex would go after Lana to recover the nanites she stole that Lex needs to survive. When Clark asks if Oliver saw anything useful, Oliver hesitates and then says he didn't notice anything. Lana notices Oliver's hesitation, and Clark promises they'll find whoever is responsible.
Clark and Lana sneak into the devastated boardroom and Clark starts to weaken from kryptonite exposure. Lana finds one of the toy's silver balls with a tiny kryptonite chip inside of it. When she touches it, the green glow disappears. Clark notes that kryptonite can be used to increase explosive power. The chip has the Queen Industries logo on it and Lana figures that Oliver is something up to something. She tells Clark that Oliver was ready to kill Lex in Cuba. Clark decides to keep Oliver out of the investigation so he won't be tempted again.
Oliver calls Chloe in to visit him and asks her to track down Winslow Schott, a MIT graduate and former Queen Industries employee who was obsessed with toys. Oliver was forced to let him go when he started putting explosives in the toys. He asks Chloe not to tell Clark because he figures that Lex has hired Schott, and Clark won't support Oliver's decision to kill Lex. Chloe isn't happy at the situation but Oliver notes that Lex knows who Clark really is and can kill their friend with ease if they don't do something. Chloe goes to Oliver's private jet to access the files. Clark arrives and realizes that she's helping Oliver to find and kill Lex. Chloe argues that Lex isn't the man that Clark once knew and that Lex will stop at nothing to kill Clark. Clark refuses to believe that, and notes that he could have killed her to dispose of Brainiac. Instead he found another way that didn't involve killing. Chloe reluctantly agrees and gives him Schott's file.
Schott visits the hospital carrying balloons and a present and asks where Oliver's room is.
Lana is at the farm looking at the necklace she wore when Clark arrives. She explains that according to Dr. Grohl, her nanites absorb kryptonite radiation. Clark has already checked Schott's last known address and found that he's moved, and Lana warns that Lex is more dangerous than ever with nothing to live for.
Schott handcuffs the sleeping Oliver to his bed. When Oliver wakes up, Schott sets up a toy chimpanzee with cymbals and tells Oliver that when it claps 53 times, it will explode: 53 being the number of patents he accuses Queen Industries of stealing from him. Oliver manages to secretly free one hand and taunts Schott into coming close enough to grab him. He forces Schott to release his other hand, deactivates the monkey, and asks where Lex is.
Clark and Lana find Schott's new address from the patent office. He's not there, but they find the doll and realize it has a TV camera in it sending images to Lex. They also see Schott's model buildings and realize his next target is the
Daily Planet.
A nurse visits Oliver's room and finds him gone. Schott is tied up to the bed. She inadvertently releases him just as Chloe arrives. Schott activates a remote control detonating the balloons and releasing knockout gas, then leaves. Clark arrives a few minutes later and gets Chloe to Isis, then has her track Lex's TV transmission via a Queen Industries satellite. She programs the tracker into a PDA but warns that they can only track Lex's IP address for 10 minutes before the satellite passes beyond Metropolis.
Clark goes to the
Daily Planet where Lana is searching for the bomb. He finds it on the roof but discovers it's powered by kryptonite. He's unable to approach it safely. Lex contacts them via radio transmission and tells them that they'll have to choose. Lana can absorb the radiation but she'll forever be toxic to Clark. Lana insists that they give up their love for the innocents and goes to the bomb. She absorbs the radiation and defuses the bomb in time, but glows with kryptonite radiation.
Using the PDA, Clark finds the truck that Lex is using as his mobile base of operations. He prepares to kill Lex but Lana arrives and holds him off, saying that killing Lex would destroy everything Clark stands for. They're interrupted when the truck blows up.
At Isis, Chloe reviews hospital footage and sees that Oliver left with Schott's explosive toy. As she realizes what happened, Oliver come in and admits that he used the toy to secretly blow up Lex's truck and Lex with it. Clark and the public will conclude that Schott tried to get revenge on Lex for betraying him. Chloe can't understand how he can let Schott be accused of a murder he didn't commit. In response, Oliver points out that she killed Sebastian Kane and, even possessed by Brainiac, her natural instinct was to protect Clark. He asks her not to tell Clark, saying Clark will need all the friends he can get in the days to come. Chloe reluctantly agrees.
Clark goes over the wreckage of the truck while Oliver examines the boardroom and a shattered portrait of Lex while considering his enemy's signet ring.
Lana goes to Chloe, who tries to comfort her.
Clark finds Lana waiting for him in the loft. She tells him that there's nothing Grohl can do, and they'll have to love with their choice. Lana assures Clark she'll always love him. He approaches her and manages to kiss her once before he collapses. Lana, crying, says she'll always be there for him no matter what and then leaves.
