Chloe is celebrating her birthday at the Ace of Clubs nightclub. Oliver talks to her on the balcony and passes on a present from Clark: a copy of
Tales of the Weird & Unexplained. Clark is busy in Keystone City helping Bart (Impulse) deal with a crisis. As they go back inside, Chloe sees Lois having a good time and admits she’s envious of her cousin. Lois has a career as a reporter while Chloe’s marriage is coming apart. Lois comes over and gives Chloe a birthday cupcake, then says she has to go because the
Daily Planet wants her to cover a story in Mexico City.
A magician and entertainer, Zatanna, comes over to Oliver and asks if he’d like a little magic in his life. He sends her over to Chloe, and she asks her to make a wish. Chloe thinks for a second and then blows out the candle.
Chloe goes back to her apartment in Smallville and goes to sleep. She wakes up the next morning and looks in the mirror… and discovers she has turned into Lois.
First, Chloe calls Lois in Mexico City, but Lois hasn’t noticed anything unusual and still has her normal body. Chloe then goes to the
Planet and confirms that it’s not just in her mind: everyone sees her as Lois. She checks the computer and finds where Zatanna is performing. As she prepares to go, Clark comes in and figures that she’s Lois as well. Chloe doesn’t say anything about who she really is. Clark admits that he talked to Lois by phone several times the night when she was waiting at the airport for her flight. Chloe’s marriage comes up and Clark admits that he can see Jimmy’s side of the story, that Chloe doesn’t believe him. As they prepare to leave, Clark gets a report of a police standoff.
Oliver is at his new office at LuthorCorp when Zatanna comes in. She says she needs help to recover a family heirloom, a book that belonged to her father, John Zatara. Oliver has heard of Zatara, the world’s greatest magician, but admits that the book is part of Lex’s private collection and he doesn’t have access to it. Zatanna offers him a deal: she’ll grant him one wish in return for the book. She gives him until midnight to decide and mysteriously disappears.
“Lois” continuing oddly, including tripping on her high heels. Clark catches and looks at her, and Chloe notes that she’s never seen Clark look at her quite that way. They get to the standoff and find an antiques dealer, Yuri, screaming in Latin while the police try to calm him down. A policeman comes over and gives “Lois” the money he owes her from their Friday poker game. Much to Clark’s surprise, “Lois” understands Latin and translates what Yuri is saying. He’s cursing a woman named Zatanna. Chloe asks Clark to go to Zatanna’s address at superspeed. Clark pretends he doesn’t know what she’s talking about and Chloe then tells him facts that only she would know, convincing him.
As they go to the theater where Zatanna is performing, Clark tries to apologize for what he said about seeing Jimmy’s side of things. Chloe admits that Clark is too nice a guy, but Clark admits that sometimes he would prefer a normal life as a reporter. They confront Zatanna, who is looking at a photo of her and her father. When Clark asks why Zatanna cursed Chloe, the magician says that she doesn’t have any control over the magic: what Chloe got was what she wants in her heart. Zatanna tells Chloe that she’ll change back to her normal self as soon as she no longer wants to be Lois. Chloe says she’s had enough but nothing happens and Zatanna observes she must still want to be Lois. Zatanna admits that she gave Yuri his wish, to understand dead languages, in return for information on the book she’s seeking. When Clark asks her how she can make those kinds of deals, Zatanna wonders what he wants. She looks at him for a moment, her eyes glittering, and Chloe pulls Clark away. He says that he feels fine and leaves. However, outside he calls Chloe “Lois” and they spot a purse-snatcher across the street. Clark just stares and Chloe says that he needs to do something. He agrees… and then pulls out a cell phone and call 911.
At the
Planet, Chloe tries to get through to Clark but he insists he doesn’t even remember what Chloe told him earlier about who she really was. She gets him up to the roof and locks the door. Clark insists she let him go and pulls off the door handle. However, he thinks it was rusted through. Chloe gets him to concentrate and listen, and Clark can hear all the sounds of the city. However, he figures it’s some kind of acoustic effect. Chloe tries to hit him with a pipe and misses, and Clark begins to wonder if “Lois” is going nuts.
That night, Green Arrow breaks into the LuthorCorp warehouse holding Lex’s personal collection. He knocks out two guards with a gas arrow and then finds Zatanna’s book. He takes it outside and Zatanna appears. She easily recognizes him as Oliver Queen despite his best efforts to deny it. She asks for the book but Oliver says that it contains black magic. He prepares to burn it and Zatanna explains that it has a ritual that will allow her to bring her father back to life. Oliver tosses the book into a nearby trashcan fire, but Zatanna summons it to her and then conjures mystic chains to tie him to an electrical pole. Zatanna ignores Oliver’s warnings and walks off, promising her father that she’ll bring him back.
Clark and “Lois” visit Yuri at the hospital. His wish has ended and he tells them that the book is dangerous. The ritual that Zatanna told him she wanted requires the sacrifice of one life to bring back another.
Zatanna goes to the
Planet’s rooftop and starts to cast the spell. As a mystic vortex opens and lightning appears, Clark and Chloe arrive at the building and see the storm. Chloe tells Clark that he isn’t a normal guy, and he has powers that can make a difference. She tells him to have faith and use his powers to jump to the roof and stop Zatanna. Chloe tries to get through to him and Clark begins to believe her. Chloe transforms back to her own self and Clark, inspired, leaps to the roof.
Something is starting to come through the vortex on the roof. Clark warns Zatanna that she will have to sacrifice a life to bring back her father, but Zatanna explains she plans to sacrifice her own life to bring back her father. Clark asks if Zatara would want his daughter to kill herself for him. Before Zatanna can decide, Chloe bursts through the door and is pulled into the vortex.
On the roof of the Daily Planet, Zatanna recites a ritual from the book, demanding that her father come back to life. Lightning flashes and a storm appears overhead. Clark and Chloe see the special effects. Chloe tells him that he doesn’t want to be a normal guy, and he has to use the power he can feel to jump to the rooftop. Clark considers her words, then sees that Chloe has reverted to her normal self. Clark braces and then leaps to the rooftop. He tells Zatanna to stop the spell and asks what cost is she willing to pay. Zatanna is willing to sacrifice her life to bring her father back. She accuses Clark of being unable to understand her pain, but he admits that he’s lost a father too. However, all he could ultimately do was let go of the past. Chloe gets to the roof through the door and is pulled into the vortex. Zatanna is forced to choose whether to sacrifice an innocent life to bring her father back, or stop the ritual. She considers as her father starts to appear next to Chloe… and then recites the spell to close the vortex. Chloe is blasted free and Zatanna just stares at where her father was.
Chloe goes back to her apartment to make sure that she’s back to normal. Clark arrives with coffee and bagels as a peace offering, and thanks her for her help. Chloe is satisfied with her role of helping Clark to become a superhero. Clark admits that the life of a normal reporter was something he considered, but ultimately he has to accept his responsibility to use his powers to help others. Chloe explains that she didn’t tell Clark at first who she really was because she wanted to see how her life would be as Lois. Finally, she points out that it was clear to her that Clark loves Lois, and tells him that he may have to let Lois into his life. She understands that he’s reluctant to give his heart to someone else after what happened with Lana, but he wonders if she’s talking about him, or her and Jimmy. Chloe says he might be right and says they both have to move on with their lives.
Oliver finds Zatanna waiting for him in his office. She apologizes and says that there are people with much greater magical powers out there, and she’d like to help when she can. Zatanna gives Oliver her phone number and tells him to call her if he ever needs magical help. For now, she plans to do some light reading and find a way to carry on her father’s legacy.
At the office, Clark is working on a story as Lois looks at him. She finally admits that Chloe told her what happened and finds the list of rules she gave him when he first started as a reporter. Clark has framed the paper, and Lois chides him for keeping it and suggests they hang it up. She informs him that she’s going out on a date with a passenger she met on the plane back from Mexico. When Clark suggests they get together later, Lois says that didn’t work well the last time they tried it, and they should keep their relationship on a purely business basis.
Oliver meets Chloe at Isis and asks if she’s ready to give up on the possibility of being a reporter. Chloe says that thanks to Zatanna’s wish, she’s now sure that the life she has now is the one she wants. She goes to work coordinating Oliver’s team of heroes spread across the world.
