On the day of the meteor storm, the Kents are knocked off the road by a meteor. In another field Lionel finds his son Lex lying in a devastated cornfield, his hair gone.
Young Kal-El finds Jonathan and Martha and peers into the truck cab at them. A few yards away, a black ovoid cracks open. A protoplasmic form flows out and then takes on the form of a young boy.
In the present, Tess looks at a sketch of the boy who emerged from the meteor, a sketch from Lionel’s collection.
Clark visits Tess at the
Daily Planet with a story about missing people that nobody seems interested in. Tess tells him the facts don’t support his story but he accuses her of covering up the story. She tells Clark the only person covering up anything is him.
Davis is having supper with Chloe at her apartment above the Talon and they discuss Chloe’s breakup with Jimmy. Chloe tells him that Jimmy has made it clear he doesn’t want to hear from her ever again. Davis cuts himself while chopping food but by the time Chloe gets to him, the injury has disappeared. Before she can pursue the matter, Clark arrives and sees them together. Awkwardness ensues. Finally Davis leaves, wincing in pain. Later, he finishes burying something at the cornfield where Clark’s ship crashed. He gets into his truck but gets a cell phone call. As he answers the phone, he turns on the headlights and sees Tess standing in the around ahead of him. She activates a remote and Davis’ truck blows up.
At the Talon, Chloe goes over Clark’s story and agrees something is going on. Clark finally asks her what she sees in Davis. Chloe says that she needs someone to get support from, and Clark hasn’t been there for her. Clark warns that he’s done a background check on Davis but his history is a total blank. Chloe breaks off the conversation when she finds a police report that the police have found Davis’ truck, destroyed.
Davis wakes up in a bad at the Luthor manor and finds himself wrapped up in bandages. Tess comes in and apologizes, and admits she’s surprised that he survived. She tells him she knows all about him and the fact he’s been killing criminals, but she’s comfortable with that. Davis says he can’t control himself but Tess notes that he can’t even kill himself now. She starts to explain his past, showing him sketches from Lionel’s portfolio.
Davis remembers that he was in the cornfield on the day of the meteor storm. He watched as Martha and Jonathan took Clark away. Davis was forced to run when Lionel’s soldiers came to get him. They chased him into a cornfield and took him to the manor. There, Young Lex found him in an upstairs room. The two boys talked about their favorite superhero, Guardian Angel, then go to play.
As he remembers, Tess tells him that Lionel was looking for the “Traveler,” an alien whose arrival was foretold by prophecy. What Lionel didn’t know was that a second boy arrived on earth, and he was the Traveler.
Clark and Chloe go to the cornfield and talk to the tow truck drive, who confirms that the police didn’t find a body in the truck. Clark recognizes the cornfield from when he arrived and uses his x-ray vision. He spots dozens of corpses in shallow graves.
At the manor, Davis leaves his room and remembers more of his past. He remembers mock sword fighting with Lex in Lionel’s study. Lex points out a lead casket that belonged to St. George, and explains that the warrior fought a dragon to protect the world. When Lex opens the casket, he reveals a piece of green kryptonite. Young Davis screams in pain and falls to the ground.
In the present, Davis realizes there is one thing that can stop him. Tess finds him and admits she can’t hold him, but believes his role as the Destroyer is to fight the Traveler and make sure the hero finds his destiny. She tells him that Clark is the Traveler, and Davis starts to transforms her. He knocks her out and leaves.
Clark and Chloe go to the
Planet, and Clark wonders how Chloe could have ever defended Davis. They figure that Davis wasn’t in the truck because someone kidnapped him, and Chloe believes Tessa is responsible.
Clark goes to the hospital to meet with an injured Tess. She tells him that she found Lionel’s journal, but that he never realized that Clark was the Traveler. Lex and Lionel were so busy trying to determine which one would be the Destroyed and oppose the Traveler, that they never realized they had him all the time. The reason Lionel didn’t believe that Davis was the Traveler was because he tested him and the boy proved normal. He then had his security guard dump Davis on the street. When Martha called Lionel to ask his help setting up their adoption of Clark, Lionel realized who the Traveler was.
Davis goes to Isis and sees Chloe. He tries to explain what he’s going through but she tries to run. He stops her and says that he loves her, and asks her if she loves him. Chloe insists she doesn’t and Davis asks her to help kill him. A few minutes later, Clark arrives there and discovers that Chloe pulled up the floor plans of Dr. Grohl’s lab… where Clark was held in a kryptonite cage.
Davis has entered the cage and tells Chloe that it’s time. Chloe says she can’t do it but Davis begs her to activate the cage. As she reaches for the switch, Clark superspeeds in and grabs her arm. He tells Davis that they should have been brothers, and it’s not Davis fault what happened to him. Davis says it was his destiny to become the Destroyer, and that there’s nothing either of them can do to fight it. As Clark says that Davis needs to find something in his life to hold on to, Davis looks at a crying Chloe. His eyes glow red and Chloe throws the switch. Davis is sprayed with liquid kryptonite. As he lies dying, he remembers how he transformed for the first time, killing Lionel’s security man at the side of the road as a boy. Chloe holds her hand up to the Plexiglas side of the cage and he reaches for her. They share a brief moment and then he dies.
Later, Clark visits Chloe and assures her that Oliver Queen is taking care of things. She says she had to do what she did, because she couldn’t let the world be endangered because of Clark’s ethics.
Tess visits Clark at the Kent barn and again accuses him of being the Traveler. He denies it and Tess says she can see why Lex turned against Clark, when Clark refused to share his secret. She tells Clark that she’ll wait for him to tell her the truth, but Clark says she’ll have a long wait. As he leaves, she says it’ll be shorter than he thinks. She returns to the manor and takes a case from hiding. Inside the case is a Kryptonian artifact.
Chloe returns to her apartment but hears something downstairs in the Talon. She goes to the basement and finds Davis, hiding in the shadows. He admits that he adapted to the kryptonite and is stronger than ever. Davis tells Chloe there’s only thing that can save Clark from him: Chloe. Somehow she manages to calm the beast within. Davis asks her to stay with him, for lark’s sake and the sake of the world. She goes up to the basement door, considers it for a moment… then locks the door and goes back to Davis.
