|Wait? Wasn't Clark Superboy? Why is Lex Luthor dead? Why does Clark meet all these superheroes as teenagers? |
The Smallville series borrows liberally from various sources, including the comic books and the Christopher Reeves movies. However, it has its own internal continuity and is not dependent on or directly related to any of those sources. Thus Clark Kent and Lex Luthor have met as teenagers, something that has not occurred in various origins in the comics. Green Arrow is older than Clark Kent and was a hero before Superman came to prominence. Brainiac is a Kryptonian computer construct. Clark meets and falls in love Lois Lane as a teenager. Metropolis is in Kansas. And so on. Also, not all of the sources Smallville draws on are internally consistent among themselves. Brainiac was originally a Coluan in the comic books, but a Kryptonian computer in the WB Animated Universe. And sometimes the comic books have changed/"retconned" events to match the TV series.
