When the citizens of South Park discover the Internet is gone, they can no longer function. After hearing a rumor, the Marsh family packs up and heads west in hope of finding Internet there. Much like the California Gold Rush, they soon find that they're not the only ones looking.

| After Kyle fixes the Internet one of the researchers proclaims, "The flashing yellow light is green now!" The flashing light was actually orange in the earlier scenes.

| Close Encounters of the Third Kind:
During the scene in which the team of researchers are attempting to communicate with the Internet, a man plays a set of notes on a keyboard. This is a reference to the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), in which humans attempt to communicate with a UFO via musical notes as well. The only difference between the set of notes played from the movie and this episode is the final note, probably on purpose to avoid any copyright infringements.
| On Deadly Ground:
At the end of the episode, Randy gives a powerful speech about the abuse of Internet usage. This is a parody of the film On Deadly Ground (1994), in which Steven Segal's character Forrest Taft delivers a gripping speech on the abuse of oil.
