Dr. Curt Connors lost his arm while in service to the army. On the verge of discovering a way to transfer a lizard's D. N. A. into a human's body to give a human their ability to restore lost limbs, he unwittingly tests it on himself too soon. The D. N. A. restores his limb, but within hours, he became a full-fledged, human lizard!
Peter was Dr. Curt Connor's student, and helped with the experiment, so he feels guilty for Dr. Connor's transformation. Peter (as Spider-Man) reverses the transformation since he knew the procedure, as he had worked with Dr. Connors on the project. But Dr. Connors occasionally must use the Neogenic Recombinator to prevent it from happening again.
Dr. Connors becomes one of Spider-Man's best allies, as he helps Spider-Man when Spider-Man is on the verge of becoming Man-Spider.
