Eddie Brock was an average news reporter who was always overshadowed by Peter Parker. After finally obtaining a story that would make him the most popular news reporter in town, the story of Dr. Connors being the Lizard, Spider-Man captures him to prevent Eddie from spreading the word. Once Eddie gets free, he alerts J. Jonah Jameson, though Dr. Connors has already changed back to his normal state, making Eddie look foolish.
Later on, Eddie tries to redeem himself by attaining pictures of Spider-Man robbing the crashed space shuttle on the Brooklyn Bridge, piloted by Jameson's own son, John. While he notices the Rhino as the real culprit, he knows that Jameson will be happier if he portrays Spider-Man as the thief. Spider-Man, on the other hand, sees this as a perfect opportunity to gain Jameson's trust by saving his son. Once Jameson learns that the Rhino was the real thief, he fires Eddie Brock; Eddie blames Spider-man for this. Aboard the ship is the alien symbiote, which attaches to Spider-Man. It causes Spider-Man to become murderous, and changes his personality entirely. Spider-Man decides to get rid of it by using the sound waves of a ringing, giant bell, though it attaches to Eddie Brock, and their shared hatred of Spider-Man combine to make a deadly villain -- Venom. Venom possesses all of the powers of Spider-Man, as well as superior strength and the knowledge of Spider-Man's alter-ego. He also does not trigger Spider-Man's Spider-Sense, which poses a deadly problem for Spider-Man. Spider-Man successfully defeats the symbiote by bringing him near the launching of a space shuttle, in which the roaring rockets separate him from Eddie. Spider-Man webs the symbiote up to the space ship, and he's sent to space.
Eddie is sent to a psych ward after this event where he is treated by Dr. Kafka. Venom returns when Baron Mordo grants him his symbiote in exchange for his services to his master, Dormammu. He wants Eddie to help Dormammu reach Earth, so he can dominate it. Next to Eddie's cell stands Cletus Kasady, who hears Baron Mordo's offer, and wants the same one. He's in luck, as the symbiote has an offspring, who attaches itself to Cletus and they become Carnage. Together, they try to destroy Spider-Man, though Carnage proves somewhat superior with his extra gifts and insane mentality. Venom eventually decides to quit working for Dormammu, though Carnage remains. Carnage is sent to take the life energy of ten humans. One of them includes Dr. Kafka, whom Eddie secretly loves. He takes this personally, and decides to go after Carnage and stop him, with the help of Iron Man and Spider-Man. They are successful in the prevention of Dormammu reaching Earth, though Dr. Kafka is pulled into the dimensional transporter by Carnage. Venom jumps in and stops Dr. Kafka from being pulled in, but cannot save himself.
