Peter is offered a thousand-dollar bonus if he can manage to obtain an image of the Lizard, a humanoid lizard which has been roaming the sewers and has captured a sewer-worker. While investigating, he learns that the Lizard was once Dr. Curt Connors, Peter’s science teacher and friend. Dr. Connors was studying the power of neogenics, and came to the conclusion that when injected with the DNA of a reptile, then treated by the neogenic recombinator, one could recreate lost limbs, just as a reptile. Dr. Connors had lost his right arm while in the army, so he decided to be the first human to have the process tested on. It is a success, though he ends up transforming into a humanoid lizard, one which is bent on turning the rest of the human race into humanoid lizards as well.

| This episode aired as a sneak preview months before the following season one episodes premiered. | For sydication purposes, the scene where The Lizard accidentally hits his wife with his tail while turning is cut. |
| |
| Peter: Mr. Jameson, I still think this lizard thing is just a big hoax!
J. Jonah Jameson: I'll give a 1000 dollar bonus to whoever gets me a picture of the lizard.
Peter: Uh... color or black and white? | Spider-Man: (after hanging Eddie Brock by a piece of webbing to a lamp post) Hang lose, Brock. That webbing will melt in a couple of hours. |
| |
| It's highly unlikely that the neogenic recombinator is waterproof. |
| |
| Spider-Man mentions the Fantastic Four, Hulk, the Avengers, and the Defenders. | While Spider-Man battles the Lizard as his first major villain in this series, the Lizard certainly was not in the Amazing Spider-Man, appearing in issue 45. In the comic, Spider-Man had to battle the Lizard with his arm in a sling, which gave the Lizard an advantage. |
