Spider-Man’s popularity is already less than spectacular, so when an illusionist named Mysterio frames Spider-Man for museum robberies, then appears claiming to be their savior from him, the town believes every word of it, and are convinced that he’s a hero. After an encounter with Mysterio, Spider-Man is presumed dead, and decides to hang up his Spider-Man costume, though Detective Terry Lee convinces him to don them once again.

Episode Quotes |
| |
Aunt May: (about the Spider-Man) And a shaming lack of respect.
Peter: That I'll comp to, but I'm not a thief. | Quentin Beck: (in a flashback) I'll get you -- I swear!
Dt. Terry Lee: This is something you have trouble remembering?!
Spider-Man: Hey! I hear that kind of thing two, three times a week. | Spider-Man: This is crazy. You'd think I'd remember a guy with a fish bowl for a head.
Dt. Terry Lee: He probably wsn't born with it...just guessing, though. | Mary Jane: Maybe we can see a movie, too.
Peter: Hold on a sec. while I check my calendar. (covers receiving end on phone) Yeeesss! Yes!
(uncovers receiving end) Uh, tight schedule, MJ, but, uh, I think I can make it. | Spider-Man: Let them go...well, Jameson you can keep, but... | Mary Jane: What do I have in Spider-Man?
Peter: You both look good in skin-tight outfits? | Peter: Hero to goat overnight...and I'm not even a politician. | Mysterio: I'm more than ready to take you on -- but not here. It's got to be the same place where you ruined me.
Spider-Man: You got a little too much gravel in that fish bowl; I don't know what you're talking about. | Mary Jane: Peter? Just wanted to make sure you're still alive.
Peter: Oh no, our date -- I forgot!
Mary Jane: You sure know how to make a girl feel important.
Peter: Uh, if it isn't too late --
Mary Jane: Sorry, in my league, it's one strike, and you're out. |

Dt. Terry Lee: Well, Boy Wonder, maybe he's using different chemicals now.
This is a reference to Batman, in which his partner, Robin, was nicknamed "The Boy Wonder." |

This exact plot occured in the Amazing Spider-Man, issue 13, except Mysterio wasn't framing Spider-Man for revenge in the comic book. Also, within the plot of the comic, Betty Brant and Liz Allen were competing for the affection of Peter Parker. This couldn't have occured in the series, as Liz Allen is never shown as a love interest, nor is Betty Brant. |
