The DS9 Runabout Rio Grande, with Major Kira and Dr. Bashir onboard, responds to a distress call from a Kobliad ship. The Major and Doctor are able to save one of the three passengers. The surviving Kobliad, a security officer, requests that the body of one of the dead be thoroughly examined to verify beyond a reasonable doubt that the man, Vantika, is indeed dead. Vantika had been headed to DS9 to intercept a shipment of deuridium arriving at the station from the Gamma Quadrant before he had been captured by Kobliad security.

There is no station log entry made nor is there a Stardate given in this episode. The absence of the log entry breaks from the norm that the preceding Star Trek series had maintained. While not every single episode of Star Trek or Star Trek: The Next Generation had a log entry giving the stardate, it was the rare occassion when one was not given.
