The first contingent of a new race from the Gamma Quadrant makes its way to Deep Space Nine. Unfortunately, the new species, the Wadi, do not seem at all interested in diplomatic relations; they only want to play games...and they've heard about Quark's.

Chula: Chutes and Ladders
According to Jeanne Carrigan-Fauci, a DS9 writer who helped with teleplay for this episode, the Wadi's game of Chula is based on several ancient Egyptian, Roman, and English Elizabethan Era games. However, the name for Chula is derived from the first couple of letters from the game Chutes and Ladders. | Chula's Board Pieces: "Checkmate"
The board pieces used in Chula, which represent the people whose own lives are being put at stake, is a reference to the 1967 British television series The Prisoner episode entitled "Checkmate". |
