A Cardassian vessel leaving Deep Space Nine explodes immediately after detaching from the station. Within hours, Starfleet admirals are breathing down Commander Sisko's neck for answers. Cultural References

"The Maquis Story Arc: "Journey's End"/"Preemptive Strike"
The beginning of the tale of the Maquis, started here in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has its roots in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season seven episode "Journey's End", which had aired one month earlier. The Cardassian liasion to the Demilitarized Zone colonies, Gul Evek, was also seen preparing his fellow Cardassians to settle Dorvan V in "Journey's End"

Sisko's Ship: Daedalus Class/Discovery
Along with the timepiece in Benjamin Sisko's officer, made by the Commander in "Dramatis Personae", his office also contains a small model of a starship. It belongs to the Daedalus class of starships that went into service in 2161 and were mentioned in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "These are the Voyages...". The ship itself is modeled after the starship Discovery featured in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Volon III Colony/Landscape: "The Ensigns of Command"
The village and background shown for the Volon III Colony , showing a water source at the center of the village along with an aqueduct ascending the slopes of a large mountain in the background, is the same village scene and matte painting used for the Star Trek: The Next Generation season three episode "The Ensigns of Command".

The Maquis: World War II
The Maquis are named after the World War II French resistance movement that aided in the German expulsion from France. More information can be found here.
