Commander Sisko, Major Kira, and Doctor Bashir follow the warp signature of a vessel of the Maquis who had kidnapped Gul Dukat. Arriving at a Class M asteroid, the crew finds that Calvin Hudson has joined with the Maquis. The stakes have grown much higher and the Cardassian-Federation treaty has been brought to the brink of collapse. A single mistake now could lead to renewed hostilities between the two powers.

The completion of the Maquis story arc, which continued the events of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Journey's End", will be followed up in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season seven episode "Preemptive Strike" Premiering one month after the Maquis story arc on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "Preemptive Strike" would be the last one hour-long episode for TNG. The entire reason for the portrayal of the Maquis in these four episodes was to set up the fourth series in the Star Trek Universe: Star Trek: Voyager.
