This episode marks the departure of Michael Piller as Executive Producer, who would move to his other creation Star Trek: Voyager
full-time in the same capacity. Ira Steven Behr, who had started on the series as a Supervising Producer and later as Co-Executive Producer, would assume Piller's title on DS9 with the next episode, "The Die is Cast".

This episode showcases the Obsidian Order's construction of new, more powerful vessels, which is a direct reference to "Defiant
". In the latter episode, the Maquis member Thomas Riker learns that the Order is building stronger ships in secret and takes the Defiant
to stop the building of the new vessels.
