  Episode Summary
While playing out a secret agent mission in the holosuite, Bashir is interrupted by Garak, who tags along for the excitement. Meanwhile, disaster on the Runabout Orinoco leaves Sisko, Kira, Dax, O'Brien, and Worf, caught in the transporter beam. The rest of the Ops crew are able to save their stranded compatriots by placing their pattern information in the ship's computer. Unfortunately, the computer decides that the best place to store their patterns is in the holosuite and Bashir and Garak find themselves trying to save the villains in their secret agent tale.

  Cultural References
"Our Man Bashir": Our Man Flint
The title of the episode, and the events contained within, is a reference to the 1966 sci-fi secret agent film Our Man Flint, starring James Colburn and directed by Daniel Mann.

Holosuite Program: James Bond Franchise
The entire holosuite program contains numerous references to the James Bond novel/movie franchise. Aside from the sexual innuendo name of Mona Luvsitt, the holosuite program includes the plan of Hippocrates Noah, which resembles Hugo Drax's plan in Moonraker and Karl Stromberg's plan in The Spy Who Loved Me. Also included is Garak's statement that he feels that, "Julian Bashir, secret agent, will return", which is a reference to the end credits of James Bond movies where a caption is shown that says "James Bond will return in..." Also of note is Bashir's comments on his secret agent character, who was working during the time of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In truth, Bashir and the DS9 crew are in the midst of a Cold War between the Dominion and the United Federation of Planets.

"After all, what could possibly go wrong?"
Garak's quote to Bashir at the beginning of the episode is a reference to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes that dealt with holosuite programs, almost all of which would invariably malfunction.
